An ex-Brit gives his views-(without fear
or favor)---of the American Scene
How's the coalition against world terrorism doing???
As
the post-September eleventh solidarity appears to diminish
in Europe, and elsewhere around the world, the heavy handed
go it alone attitude of the United States and the accompanying
abrasive rhetoric of President Bush is causing much unease
and in some cases violent disagreement, especially in certain
European countries, (Mr. Blair not withstanding), with what
are considered inflammatory and irresponsible statements
by various United States Government spokes persons.
In my humble opinion, one person that has gained respect
from the press, and most people who have attended or heard
his daily press briefings, is the United State Defense Secretary
Mr. Donald Rumsfeld for his straight forward tell it like
it is answers to difficult questions with humor and a certain
humility, is beyond reproach.
Please enlighten me as to how the British public feel and
react to the current situation. Do they go along with Mr.
Blair's on the surface all out support of the American expansion
of the conflict to other mid-eastern nations?
I
see that Vice President Cheney is out and about in the Middle
East, obviously trying to gain a consensus of opinion as
to which, (if any), Arab nation would support an attack
by the United States on Iraq and the regime of President
Saddam Hussein.
I don't think that he will find much support for such an
operation from any of the Arabian countries.
Perhaps he should swing by Europe on the way back to the
United States and take a consensus of their feelings also,
as I think that he would find a certain alacrity to support
such action at this time.
One must remember that another incursion into Iraq by American
forces could possibly destabilize the entire oil rich region
and bring chaos to the oil guzzling nations of this world.
Apart from that, the United States does not have the military
manpower that it had at the time of the Desert Storm incident
to fight a war on several fronts.
