Bill Sykes' - In Retrospect II.
(August 2006)

Bill Sykes looks back in retrospect at material which has been published in previous editions of "View from America", in an attempt to determine whether the subject matter written then is still applicable in today’s world.

Please note that Bill Sykes had the first of these retrospective articles published on the "Open Writing" website.

Preface:
The politicians and religious zealots of this world are forever instigating brutal wars which are started under all kinds of pretexts, excuses, lies, and of course religious bias, which kills and mortally wounds great numbers of the civilian population whilst at the same time demolishing much of the infrastructure.

The headlines may have shifted currently from the wars in the Middle East, Israel versus Hezbollah in Lebanon, and the long drawn out vicious, and uncontrollable chaotic civil war in Iraq which has got completely out of hand during the American occupation, where chaos, mayhem, and the inevitable killing of many innocent civilians still continues on a daily basis - but I’m sure that the Middle East war headlines are not over by a long chalk and will re-appear as and when a new crisis comes upon the scene.

A potential terrorist crisis recently occurred in Great Britain where home grown terrorist factions, who possibly were born in Britain and currently reside there, are said to be suspected of plotting to destroy several aircraft somewhere over the Atlantic Ocean, (en route from London Heathrow Airport to the United States), with the loss of all passengers onboard.
This alleged act of a potential terrorist nature, by certain individual who are said to be of a Pakistani background, now dominates the world media headlines and I therefore thought that it was relative and appropriate for me to take a look back in retrospect to previous articles that I have written over the years in which I have discussed what I consider to be a radical decline in stature of the British nation.

Surely it doesn’t take an octogenarian ex-Brit, who spent the first forty years of his life in England and the last forty years in the United States, to be able to analyze Britain’s decline over the years into what appears to be a powerless vacuum as a world leader. My crystal ball maybe a little dim these days but it still presents a picture illustrating reasons to believe that Great Britain could be doomed to the indignity of becoming a Third World country if it continues to support an unsupportable immigration problem which has become a financial drain upon the British people.
This analysis will of course be challenged and refuted by the liberal minded amongst you on a basis of outmoded thinking that Britain is still a powerful nation upon which the sun will never set, as they, (the liberal minded), will never fully recognize or accept that the potential downfall of their country has been brought about by a lack of parliamentary leadership which has miss-handled and failed to curtail the extraordinary number of immigrants who have been allowed to set foot in and remain in Britain, without assessing the current and future cost to this once great nation of housing, and sustaining the everyday life of many of these individuals and their families.

"England my beloved England - Oh what has become of you?"

The articles in this edition have been extracted from previously published editions of "View from America", and on this particular occasion the articles that I have chosen will be centred in general around a comparison of life as I saw it in postwar 1948 Britain, when Britain started to become a haven for foreign immigrants, and the situation that I now observe to exist in today’s Britain. Just in case any readers may say, "What does this American know about life in Britain?", perhaps I should remind them that my family was born in Great Britain and we as a family lived in Britain for forty years before emigrating to America on the last day of December 1965, and further more we have revisited England for at least a minimum of couple of weeks practically each and every year since the year that we left for the United States.
My information has generally been gleaned from personal discussions with family still residing in Britain and other British born citizens, on subjects that affect their daily lives and also a close scrutiny of the British media, (newspapers and television), plus personal observations of the British way of life and the political atmosphere that now exists - so it cannot be said that I don’t know what I’m talking about.
Well I suppose it can but I’m sure that there are many amongst you that understand and may agree with my observations, and for those that don’t, and who have constructive criticism on the subjects discussed in the following articles, you can always express your feelings by contacting me at the E-Mail address provided.

The articles included in this edition are entitled as follows: "The old home town, she ain’t what she used to be", which has been extracted from the August 2003 edition of "View from America", and this will be followed by a story extracted from the Summer 2004 edition entitled: "Observations on current day Britain", and I will finish up these observation with one from the September 2005 edition entitled: "Britain an integrated society?".
