An ex-Brit gives his views-(without fear
or favor)---of the American Scene
In the beginning. (Government of the people, by the
people, for the people).
After the declaration of Independence was issued on
the 4th of July, 1776, a Congress, composed of delegates
from the thirteen colonies formulated a plan to form a
new government for the new nation. The government was
going to be a republic and the system of laws was to be
called the “Articles of Confederation” which
was later to be replaced by a document named the Constitution.
The Constitution was written in 1787 by a gentleman by
the name of Robert Morris, (the brains behind the document
being James Madison), and the document was ratified and
accepted by the summer of 1788 and was adopted and went
into operation in 1789, after the inauguration of George
Washington as the first President of the United States.
The Constitution provided that a President was to be
elected every four years, and was to serve as many terms
as the people wished. This was later changed by the 22nd
amendment to the Constitution, which limited any future
elected President to two terms in office.
The supreme law of the United States is the Constitution
which divides the government of the nation into three
branches, the Legislative Branch, (law making), the Executive
Branch, (law Enforcing), and Judicial Branch, (law interpreting).
The wise men of the era who formulated this method of
governing the people, certainly knew what they were doing
when they provided a means of checks and balances in order
to balance power within government, would turn in their
graves if they witnessed the current day interpretation
of their magnificent plan of government.
