An ex-Brit gives his views-(without fear
or favor)---of the American Scene
Now and ever shall be. (Government of the people by
money and big business). !!!.
We
now progress to today’s world and take a look at
current American politics and politicians. By the way,
just in case you are maybe thinking that this appears
to be a party political broadcast, I would like to say
upfront that I am a registered "Independent"
voter, who votes for whom I consider to be the best candidate
for the job "regardless of their political affiliations"
and I certainly try to avoid giving bias to either Democrats
or Republicans.
The electors, [well some of them—the turnout was
somewhat pathetic, (around 40%), due to the fact that
many voters who have become disenchanted with current
politics stayed away], went to the voting stations on
the 5th of November, 2002, to select candidates for Government
positions within the United States Senate, the House of
Representatives, and State and local public offices.
Unfortunately,
it would appear that in general the candidate who spends
the most money in media advertising comes out the winner.
This has got to be the most expensive election on record
and has the most at stake for the American people when
you consider the composition of the new government and
the vital decisions that have to be made within the coming
months. Decisions that will profoundly affect the people
of America for many years to come. It has been calculated
that the candidates for public office, in this election
alone, spent in excess of $1B for TV advertising.
The amount of propaganda is phenomenal. If one wants
to be fully conversant with the political positions of
the people that are putting up for office, one has to
plow through reams of paper and an overwhelming amount
of continuous TV advertising.
The
problem is, who is telling the truth and more importantly
will they carry out their promises if and when they get
elected, as most of the advertising is aimed at portraying
very negative opinions of the opposing candidate instead
of providing details as to what they the candidate is
going to do if he or she gets elected?
Democrats bad mouth Republicans and Republicans bad mouth
Democrats. Talk about character assassination. !!!
Wonder what Guy Faulks would have thought of these political
shenanigans --- guess he would be stocking up and keeping
his store of gunpowder dry!!!
