An ex-Brit gives his views-(without fear
or favor)---of the American Scene
What did the Democratic and Republican parties do
right or wrong?
The Republican Party obviously did the "right
thing" by staying away from such touchy subjects
as, the potential "go it alone" war with Iraq,
the state of the faltering United States economy with
the prospects of once again becoming the largest debtor
nation in the world, health care issues, pension issues,
prescription drug issues, the ugliness of corporate corruption
and its effect on the job market, the burgeoning unemployment
issues, and of course they were fortunate enough to employ
the President as chief fund raiser for Republican candidates
by his criss-crossing the country on Air Force One at
the expense of the American tax payer.
Did
you know that Mr. Bush visited the State of Florida twelve
times prior to the election, in order one would assume
to bolster up brother Jeb’s efforts to obtain a
second term as Governor, which he did. Having the power
of the President of the United States behind you really
counts.
The Democratic Party did the “wrong thing”
by staying away from all of the above mentioned controversial
issues, and of course did not have the services of a Presidential
fund raiser.
Lack of dynamic leadership in the Democratic party and
their failure to exploit their position as the loyal opposition
by challenging some of the Presidential edicts on the
basis of “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil”
and wanting desperately to appear to be supporting Presidential
issues, cost them the election. Plus the fact that the
people who mattered the most, the disenchanted voters,
stayed home in droves.
The
Republicans now control the White House and both houses
of Congress, giving the President an awesome power base.
I would suggest that by giving the President a virtual
carte blanche mandate to control United States policies
home and abroad is tantamount to bordering upon a not
so benevolent dictatorship, which may bode ill for the
future of the American people.
