Bill Sykes' Newsletter from America.
(February 2002)
An ex-Brit gives his views- (without fear
or favor)---of the American Scene
Breaking News.
A
recent news report, (21st of January 2002), in a leading
UK newspaper, stated that a Boeing 767, purchased by China
for the use by President Jiang Zemin as the Presidential
equivalent of Air Force One, has been found to have extremely
advanced covert listening devices installed within the aircraft
structure.
Assuming that the story is correct and these devices were
planted in the aircraft prior to delivery to the Peoples
Republic of China, this act could do irreparable damage
to United States /China relations.
It is of the utmost importance that the matter be fully
investigated on an immediate basis and if persons, companies,
or members of United States Government Agencies were involved
in the decision to place and install these listening devices
in the aircraft, that the perpetrators should be heavily
censored and disciplined accordingly.
In this day and age of the vital importance of establishing
good relations with China, who on earth would be so arrogant
and foolish as to be involved in what appears to be such
a covert action.
This action may have far reaching consequences with respect
to United States and China diplomatic relations. As I have
said previously, the United States is sadly lacking in intelligence
matters when it comes to Foreign Diplomacy. I would suggest
that changes be made, and made immediately.
President Bush is scheduled to meet with Chinese President
Jiang Zemin next month. If the meeting takes place it should
lead to some interesting and somewhat embarrassing dialogue
for the American President. !!!
State of the Union message. (29th of January 2002).
President
George W. Bush in his State of the Union message reiterated
his previous statements that Iraq, Iran and Korea are still
considered to be, (what he called), the "Axis of Evil"
posing a threat to world peace and would be dealt with at
the appropriate time, or words to that effect.
As I said previously, we the United States cannot adopt
a unilateral go it alone attitude in funding and fighting
a war against terrorism on several fronts, all at the same
time.
Is this tantamount to the United States assuming that we
are powerful enough to establish dominance as the worldwide
power broker?
Perhaps we are in for a big surprise
In a speech today, the 30th of January, Mr. Bush urged
the people of America to volunteer their services to, shall
we say, the war effort.
Surely, he cannot be thinking of re-instituting a version
of the draft, (conscription) ----- many still remember the
particularly violent opposition by certain factions of the
American populace to the draft during the Vietnam "Police
Action".
Yours, very sincerely,
Eric (Bill) Sykes. (California).
