Bill Sykes' Newsletter
from America.
(January 2005)
An ex-Brit gives his views - (without
fear or favor) - of the American Scene
American
magazine.
Did a leading American magazine give a year-end
front page coverage to the wrong person (namely George
W Bush)?
I certainly
think so.
A President that goes to war in the Middle
East for the wrong reasons and does not admit that
mistakes were made in declaring a unilateral war against
the will of several leading nations who expressed their
objections that the United Nations were being bypassed.
A President who apparently agreed with his Secretary
of Defence that the number of American troops committed
to the Iraqi war was more than sufficient to win the
war, (which eventually was proven to be correct), but
on the other hand not enough, if any, consideration
was given to the number of American troops that would
be required to win the peace, (and that was dismally
and totally insufficient).
A President who has overseen
the depletion of the economy of this great nation by
spending hundreds of billions of dollars on a war to
protect large American oil company interests, to a
point that we have once again become the largest debtor
nation in the world.
A President who has seen the death toll of over a thousand young American service
personnel in Iraq since the war ended, and the thousands who have been heavily
wounded rise with each day that the brutal aftermath reigns in Iraq, and who
apparently does not have a clue as to how or when to orchestrate an honourable
and acceptable exit strategy of American forces from Iraq.
One must also not
forget the deaths of American soldiers in the forgotten war with Afghanistan.
A President who tried to force the principals of American democracy upon
a people who have never had democracy, and from what I observe of the current
situation do not want American type democracy.
Shall I go on, for I’m sure that there is a whole
lot more other items of significant importance and flawed
judgement that I haven’t touched
upon? Perhaps the readers, British, American, or whatever, can provide
me with their opinions as to whether a man of this calibre,
lacking in intelligent and worldly judgement, deserves
to be given the honour of being declared, "The American
Man of the Year".
I would like to suggest that
someone is looking at America’s
current situation through rose coloured glasses.
