Bill Sykes' Newsletter
from America.
(June 2005)
An ex-Brit gives his views - (without
fear or favor) - of the American Scene
Readers
Letters: (Praise indeed).
Vincent writes from
UK.
"I have just had the finest reading experience of my life amongst the recollections
of Bill Sykes.
As a born and bred Huddersfield man, Bill’s account
of his World War Two experiences, and beyond, had me
laughing, despairing, holding a lump in my throat, and
finally nodding in agreement. This gentleman is truly
a great ambassador, not only for Huddersfield, (his hometown),
but also for his generation and indeed for mankind.
I can only pray that many young people read, see, hear, and follow the wisdom
of Bill’s closing words.
I wish him well in all his endeavours.
Thank you Bill for a moving, entertaining and thought provoking, account of
a remarkable life".
My comment:
A difficult thing for any one to live up, especially
myself. The contents of this letter are probably the greatest
tribute ever paid to me in my endeavours to educate the
youth of today that war is hell and it is up to them to
see that it never happens again.
I am definitely not a pacifist but do try desperately
to be a realist, and am never one to pass up such a great
accolade to the aging people of my generation. I accept
the glowing tribute on their behalf, and also on the
behalf of all people whom-so-ever they may be who have
gone beyond the call of duty to ensure that future generations
of this world will have the chance to live healthy, happy,
prosperous lives, free from the terrible conditions and degradation of wars,
especially the terrible wars currently being forced upon them.
