An ex-Brit gives his views-(without fear
or favor)---of the American Scene
Mr. Bush attends the Asian Summit.
Mr.
Bush was recently in Japan, and traveled on to mainland
China and South Korea.
I would suggest to Mr. Bush that he refrain from promoting
and repeating the "Axis of Evil" speech.
The "Cowboy" rhetoric may go down very well in
Texas, but please remember that you are now traveling in
high diplomatic circles and the delivery of threats may
be misinterpreted as being for real, and diplomatic relations
with countries and customs which far outreach the meager
short existence of the United States, may, (nay will), take
grave exception to such threats.
The coalition countries are becoming "VERY" nervous
at the tone of your speeches. Even if you, and they, believe
that the countries you continuously threaten are, as you
state, the "Axis of Evil", it is certainly not
good International politics to keep on repeating those statements
especially in the countries hosting your current visit.
Former
President Jimmy Carter is said to have criticized President
Bush's labeling of North Korea, Iran, and Iraq as an "Axis
of Evil".
He commented that it was an overly simplistic and counterproductive
statement.
Mr. Carter is attributed as saying "I think it will
take years before we can repair the damage done by that
statement".
Mr. Bush, I beg of you, please refrain from criticizing
mainland China's internal policies and stop repeating the
underlying threat, "That if mainland China attacks
Taiwan, we the United States will intervene with the provision
of full military support of Taiwan".
As I said previously, they may take you at your word and
view the threat seriously. Mainland China is a force to
be reckoned with and we cannot afford at this juncture to
under estimate their military potential.
One
can assume that President Bush did not discuss with President
Jiang Zemin the embarrassing Boeing 767 Presidential aircraft
bugging incident, as it would appear from the latest American
news reports that although the aircraft spent close to a
year in Texas for refurbishment before it went to China,
that US Intelligence Agency officials believe that the bugging
was accomplished by internal Chinese sources. !!!
It would appear that in the aftermath of Mr. Bush's harsh
rhetoric towards North Korea that Japan and South Korea
will have some political cleanup work to do in order to
ease tensions caused by Mr. Bush's speeches.
Well, I guess Mr. Bush used his prerogative and didn't listen
to my words of wisdom!!!
