An ex-Brit gives his views-(without fear
or favor)---of the American Scene
Balkan War Crime Trial.
The
trial of Mr. Slobodan Milosevic has commenced at the International
War Crimes Tribunal in the Hague, Netherlands, and because
of it's complexity it appears that the trial will drag on
for at least a couple of years.
Mr. Milosovic disputes the authority of the International
Court to try him for incidents that happened in the Balkans,
which he strongly denies that he had knowledge of or was
directly or indirectly involved in.
It would appear to this obviously uninformed writer that
it will be extremely difficult to prove, or link, Mr. Milosovic
to having direct knowledge, or personal involvement in the
atrocities committed by Serbian forces against the Albanians
populace in Kosovo.
The
Kosovo Liberation Army, (KLA), has a lot to answer for in
trying to establish Albanian autonomy in the Serbian State
of Kosovo. The Balkans have been a hot bed of conflict for
many, many, years and the only person, (to my limited knowledge),
to exert some kind of authoritative government was Marshal
Tito (*) during World war Two.
Mr. Milosevic claims that the charges of genocide are an
"ocean of Lies" and blames NATO bombing as a major
cause of civilian casualties. Mr. Milosevic is demanding
that amongst others, President Clinton,Tony Blair and senior
members of NATO, be made available for questioning as part
of his defense and that they, not he, were responsible for
the killing of innocent and defenseless civilians in the
Balkan conflict.
(*) In March of 1945 Marshal Josip Broz Tito became
Premier of Yugoslavia. He died in 1980 after controlling
Yugoslavia for 35 years.
