An ex-Brit gives his views-(without fear
or favor)---of the American Scene
In defense of France and the French people.
An
article came across my desk purporting to be an amusing
article about France and the French people. This article
was written by what I perceive to be an anonymous American
who obviously thinks his/her obnoxious remarks to be humorous.
Let me state up front that American people are not renowned
in particular for intelligent humor, (an example being
the moronic TV sit-coms), and the document in question
is no exception.
When American’s disagree with arguments against
a particular position which they support, such as the
current opposition by France, Germany, Russia, and China,
within the United Nations with respect to resolution 1441
and the proposed revised version that the coalition of
three, (apparently Spain seconded the new resolution),
which they intend to present to the United Nations
Security Council in a few days time, some Americans immediately
become irate with the offenders and started a hate campaign.
Right now France is the target of their hostility for
not going along with the coalition of two/three who apparently
wish to find any excuse to start a war with Iraq.
Getting back to the not so amusing article. Anyone who
compares Mexican food, (by the away I like Mexican food),
to French cuisine is obviously no connoisseur of fine
foods.
Perhaps he or she considers the local hamburger joint
to be an epicurean delight, (by the way I also like hamburgers).
In addition, he or she is obviously has no linguist ability
when he/she considers French people to be rude because
they will not reply to his/her obvious demanding attitude.
I’m sure that if he/she had spent long enough in
France they would find the people to be helpful and respectful
and therefore would be able to enjoy the French culture---a
word, which has little meaning, and is sadly lacking in
this land of opportunity.
This distorted view of France and the French people, (thinly
disguised as humor), presented by this anonymous American
writer certainly does not improve French/American relations.
Perhaps the writer should take an in depth look at his
own American Society before being super critical of France
and its people.
