Bill Sykes' Newsletter
from America.
(March 2003)
An ex-Brit gives his views-(without fear
or favor)---of the American Scene
Late breaking news.
-
The American Home Land security alert was lowered
today, Thursday, the 27th of February, from High to
Elevated.
Suspicions have been voiced that the elevation, which
occurred a couple of weeks ago, at a time when President
Bush was pushing hard for a war with Iraq, could have
been a ploy to obtain the support of the American
people.
Surely the Administration would not employ such tactics,
as there has not been proven that any ties exist between
Iraq and Al Qaeda to perform acts of terrorism against
the United States.
-
The on again, off again, acceptance by Turkey to
allow up to 60,000 American troops to occupy real
estate on Turkish soil has stalled once again, but
I see that missiles, trucks and other accoutrements
of war have been off loaded from ships, (flying non-
aligned flags), and are on their way to the Turkey/Iraq
border.
-
It was reported that President Bush recently indicated
that the assassination of Saddam Hussein was a distinct
and acceptable possibility. The commentator suggested
that any assassination attempt could come from inside
Saddam Hussein’s own party!
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I seem to recall
that there is a Presidential "finding" that
stipulates and forbids the participation of the United
States in plotting assassination attacks against foreign
leaders. When you come to consider how many American
Presidents have been assassinated during the last
century and a half by fellow Americans, which includes:
Abraham Lincoln, (1860), James A. Garfield, (1880),
William McKinley, (1900), John F. Kennedy, (1960),
one has to wonder who may be the next on the list.
-
I see that Prime Minister Tony Blair recently faced
a mass mutiny by more than 120 Labor Members of Parliament,
(MPs), who were amongst the 199 MPs who voted against
military action to disarm Saddam Hussein. Apparently
121 Labour rebels joined 13 Conservatives and 52 Liberal
Democrats to join in voting for an amendment declaring
that the case for military action had not been made.
Although the amendment was defeated by 393 votes to
199 it serves notice that Mr. Blair is skating upon
thin ice.
I don’t know why I have included this information,
as I’m sure that you are of course familiar
with this hotly debated news item and are cognizant
of possible consequences concerning the political
future of Prime Minister Blair.
