An ex-Brit gives his views-(without fear
or favor)---of the American Scene
An American President.
I
watched a recent TV program in which members of a round
table discussion were giving their views on the subject
of the capability, (for want of a better word), of our
current President. The defenders of the faith could see
no wrong in Mr. Bush’s position with respect to
a potential war with Iraq, but the more enlightened members,
(one of whom was from UK), asked as to why he had to make
daily TV appearances to deliver propaganda speeches in
order to gain support from the American people, who a
few years ago had no idea where Iraq was located.
But there again can one say, "You can fool some of
the people some of the time, but you can’t fool
all of the people all of the time".
The question then arose as to why America had become
one of the most hated countries in the world. This of
course was denied by supporters of Mr. Bush who brought
up the old argument, "Who was it that saved the people
of Europe, (with special reference to France of course
- obviously due to President Chirac’s stance against
a war against Iraq), during the two world wars?"
Do I have to remind readers that in World War One, America
didn’t appear on the scene until 1917, (three years
after the war started), and in World War Two they did
not really become involved in the fighting war until after
the Pearl Harbor event. But of course we cannot forget
that without American support in the form of equipment,
the provision of a large military contingent, plus lend
lease financial aid, we the people of Europe would have
been doomed to Nazi oppression.
I
have always asked myself the question, "If Pearl
Harbor had never happened, would we still have seen the
support that was eventually forthcoming?"
The American people in general, prior to Pearl Harbor,
did not really appear to be interested in what they called
a "European Problem".
I’m led to believe that Mr. Joseph Kennedy, the
American Ambassador to Great Britain, in company with
Britain’s King Edward the Eight, paid homage to
the Hitler regime.
Another sore point that came up, was why a number of
the world’s tabloid news papers depict President
George Bush in caricature as a swaggering, strutting,
smirking, Texas cowboy who has a burning desire to complete
what his father, President George Walker Bush, failed
to accomplish the removal of Saddam Hussein and his particularly
violent regime.
At
least George Bush Senior recognized the fact that if you
wish to change a regime there has to be responsible people
to put in the place of the people you replace, and George
Bush Senior’s main objective, so he said, was to
remove Iraqi forces from the oil fields of Kuwait and
install a democratic regime in Kuwait, something that
will never happen in our lifetime in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia,
Iran, Iraq, or any other Middle Eastern Muslim country.
