Bill Sykes' Newsletter from America.
(March 2003)
An ex-Brit gives his views-(without fear
or favor)---of the American Scene
World opinion!
As I said in a previous edition of the newsletter, I’m
sure that the world does not hate the American people
as a whole, but they certainly do not agree with the actions
of the American President and his administration, and
have certainly shown this by the number of people demonstrating
throughout the world against a war with Iraq.
The
idealistic American law is "That one is not condemned
until one is found guilty" or in other words, "One
is innocent until proven guilty". Question: "Have
the weapons inspectors found any evidence that Iraq has
weapons of mass destruction and intends to use them?"
Comment: "This of course will be a very moot point,
if the time comes when it is found that such weapons exist
and Saddam Hussein does use them!"
It is my belief that the American news media have not
given adequate coverage to the opinions expressed by the
millions of people worldwide, who demonstrated against
a war with Iraq. The American major TV stations have shown
large congregations demonstrating in various parts of
the world, but have given less than adequate coverage
as to the reasons why they are demonstrating. Perhaps
I should remind them of a major reason that the people
of Europe do not want war, the devastating effects of
two World Wars.
Yes, American buildings were destroyed and many people
died during the tragic events of terrorism on the eleventh
of September 2001. The tragic loss of many lives at the
World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Washington
DC, and also the loss of passengers and crew members on
four commercial airliners, but one must remember for comparative
purposes that the bombing by both combatants during World
War Two destroyed complete cities, and millions of people
were killed.
This of course does not detract from the human suffering
caused to the many nationalities killed by the terrorists
in the September eleventh terrorist action.
In
countries described by Mr. Rumsfeld as “Old Europe”,
the effects of such devastating events of the two World
wars still lingers on in the memories of older and wiser
Europeans. America must realize that countries living
on the edge of war, such as France and Germany, who fear
that the leaders of a coalition of two appear to be bringing
the whole of the Middle East to the brink of a war, are
not willing to sacrifice the lives of their families,
friends, and relatives in the aftermath of such a war.
Your answer I would assume is what other action could
be taken.
I still maintain that the key to the whole Middle East
situation lies with sorting out the Israeli/Palestinian
Arab problem. If Iraq was to be forced into submission
and taken out of the equation it would appear that Israel
would have a clear shot at taking over the whole of Palestine,
which to all intents and purposes, if the truth was known,
they have wanted to do since the British pulled out in
1948.
