An ex-Brit gives his views - (without
fear or favor) - of the American Scene
Not so sunny southern
California:
This has been the wettest winter in one hundred
and fifteen years in this part of the world, and locally
the city of Los Angeles and the surrounding areas have
been inundated on a continuous daily basis by torrential
rainstorms amounting to over twenty-five inches of
rain in the last couple of months.
The torrential rains have saturated the surrounding hillsides causing them to
come crashing down upon lower lying housing tracts and demolishing many homes.
On the other hand, expensive homes perched on the topmost edge of hillsides,
in order to obtain magnificent views, have come tumbling down when the earth
underneath them became unstable causing many houses to fall from there lofty
perches. Flooding in many parts of the area has created gigantic mud-slides which
have come slip sliding down hillsides and across major highways making them impassable.
