Bill Sykes' - In Retrospect

Bill
Sykes looks back in retrospect at material which has
been published in previous editions of "View from
America", in an attempt to determine whether the
subject matter written then is still applicable in
today’s world.
Article #17E.
Bring our troops home.
With the financial expense of continuing to provide thousands of American troops
abroad in many different countries, under the pretence of protecting American
security/interests, amounting to many billions of dollars each year, plus of
course the financing of two very expensive and un-winnable wars in Iraq, ($14
billion Dollars per month), and Afghanistan, (an unknown fiscal amount), we cannot
expect to continue to function adequately in supporting such ventures when we
consider the current financial crisis that we are faced with at home. We certainly
cannot continue to be the world’s policemen and solve everyone’s
problems by throwing large sums of money at such problems as they continue to
occur, so surely the time has come to bring the American troops home.
I realize that by bringing the troops home to a country which really has no current
employment prospects for them to come home to that this is an out of the frying
pan into the fire sort of scenario - but I would suggest that they could be gainfully
employed protecting the United States/Mexican border.
Mr. President we have a pretty brutal war going on right on our own doorstep
in Mexico where five known major drug cartels are operating between San Diego
and El Paso, and probably further down the US/Mexico border and 6,300 people
have been killed in drug related wars during 2008 alone.
The killings are exceptionally
brutal with many of the people, who have been killed by members of the cartel,
have been tortured and decapitated. Our southern most border has become a haven
for drug smugglers who are making very, very, large monetary gains by transporting
drugs across the border into the United States where they are being distributed
to many cities throughout the United States.
Apparently Mexican drug smugglers have been cloning
"Texas Department of Transportation" trucks
and have been using them to transport large quantities
of drugs across the border into the United States.
The US dollar proceeds from the drug sales in the United
States, which have been transferred back to Mexico, are enormous,
and have been estimated to be in the region of $38 billion
United States dollars per year. Surely the old
adage still exists. "no customers/no sales".
So why isn’t the American DEA, (Drug Enforcement
Agency), doing its job and preventing potential United
Sates customers from acquiring the drugs which apparently
are being readily made available.
