An ex-Brit gives his views-(without fear
or favor)---of the American Scene
Closer to home -- Cuba (A foot in the door).
The Russian Government has gradually been reducing financial
aid and military support to Cuba since1993, due to their
own precarious financial situation, and guess who recently
appeared on the scene, President Jiang Zemin of China. President
Zemin last visited Cuba in 1993, and trade between the two
countries has risen from $270M to in excess of $500m since
that time.
In his recent visit, President Zemin pledged $400M in loans
to Cuba. The Cuban leader in return has promised support
for China's bid to host the 2008 Olympic Games. The Chinese
president is traveling with a high-level delegation aimed
at increasing trade and influence in Cuba.
Shades of Mr. Kruchev and his missile installations in Cuba.

Whilst
the United States still maintains it's antagonistic attitude
to Cuba, a large segment of the world has recognized Cuba
and many tourists from several nations, (including the United
States), have visited Havana.
The Cuban contingent in southern Florida have not improved
the relationship between the United States and Cuba, or
alleviated the situation.
Relevant background information on Cuba.
From 1492 onwards, for 400 years, Cuba was a colony of
Spain.
In 1898 the United States entered into a war against Spain
and declared Cuba independent (under the protection of the
United States).
In 1902 the Cuban republic was formed and began self rule,
In 1952 Fulgencio Batista, a Cuban military officer, instituted
a military coup and established a military dictatorship
which lasted until 1958.
The
Batista dictatorship was overthrown in 1959 and Fidel Castro
came to power and has remained as Cuban leader ever since.
After overthrowing Batista, Fidel Castro severed close ties
with the United States, which has remained a thorn in the
side of the American Government ever since.
