An ex-Brit gives his views-(without fear
or favor)---of the American Scene
Movie: "Love Actually".
My wife Sheena and I saw the movie "Love Actually"
recently, and we both agreed that the script writers must
be congratulated on the words written for the sketch, where
Hugh Grant, acting the part of The Prime Minister of Great
Britain, severely chastises the truly life style, smug,
overbearing, arrogant, character who is acting the part
of the President of the United States,
If you haven't seen the movie, I will briefly explain.
Hugh Grant gives a somewhat unrealistic comedic rendition,
but never the less a terrific performance as the Prime
Minister, (who it would appear from the movie to be a
successor to Prime Minister Blair), who after a meeting
with the United States President at Number Ten Downing
Street, attends a dinner at which the smug President
makes a totally inappropriate, (by British standards),
which I remember as an overbearing speech aimed at humiliating
the Prime Minister and the people of Great Britain.
Hugh
Grant, portraying the British Prime Minister, responds
with a blistering articulate rebuttal, verbally tearing
the President's obnoxious remarks to pieces, which
is brilliant in its content. I could have stood up right
there and then in the cinema and applauded, so you
see I still have many fond feelings for Britain and its
people - oh how I wish that I had penned those words,
as in my mind I was thinking the very same thing. It would appear that the producers of the film, with
perfect timing, were obviously aware of the upcoming
State visit of President Bush to London.
State Visit by President Bush to London:
Your Majesty I recognize that you have obligations,
in your capacity as the Queen of England, Scotland, Ireland,
and Wales, to entertain certain dignitaries of foreign
countries, but the timing of this visit by the President
of the United States with his entourage of 700 personnel,
accompanied by his imported motorcade of armoured vehicles,
with the apparent request by his security advisors to
cordon off half of the city of London is totally inappropriate
and unwarranted, and if authorized could result in huge
demonstrations by the people of Britain and ensuing acts
of civil disobedience.
Fortunately, I see that Prime Minister Bair has wisely
not acquiesced to Presidents Bush's requests that in order
to preserve security, (his security), that the centre of
London where he may be passing through be cordoned off
and secured, which of course is obviously aimed at not
being publicly shown by the media as having been faced
by a large number of war detractor demonstrations attended
by many factions of the British public, which are certain
to occur.
As an afterthought your Majesty, may I suggest that
the American President be offered accommodation in
the Tower of London during his visit---preferably
for a long duration.
