Pertinent facts.
Taiwan
is an important trading partner of the United States,
hence our continuing support which in this day and age
has little to do with main land China's past communist
policies but is more related to economic factors.
The United States has a $24B annual trade with Taiwan.
Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975) fled to Formosa (later renamed
Taiwan) in 1949 and oversaw the rapid modernization of
the Taiwanese economy.
During the following years Mao Zedong (1893-1976) "Chairman
of the Chinese Communist Party" (1949-1976), engineered
the "Cultural revolution" during the years 1966-1976.

For the last ten years China has had the fastest growing
economy in the world and Mr. Bush needs China's booming
economy to assist the United States current flagging economic
down turn which appears to be leading the world into recession.
Taiwan wishes to be a separate Sovereign State and has
been supported for many years by the United States Government,
which recently provided Taiwan with sophisticated weaponry.
This has angered the mainland China Government, who's
policy is a United China with Taiwan an integral part
of their nation, to such an extent that they have engineered
a massive build up of missile weapon systems on the mainland
across the Straits of Formosa pointed in the direction
of Taiwan.
