David writes from the USA - (Letter #2)
I‘ve read some of your news letters and although
I don’t fully agree with some of the subject matter,
I thought that the contents were fair, well thought out,
and presented very well.
I don’t know what I expected, but assumed the usual
attacks on Bush, the Republican Party, the USA, and of course
an offer of nothing in return situation.
I will tell you how I look at the upcoming war with Iraq
and give you two scenarios:
1)
Worst case scenario.
Saddam Hussein attacks Israel with chemical, and biological
weapons. Israel retaliates with nuclear strikes.
Chemical and/or biological weapons are used by Saddam Hussein
against American and British troops.
Coalition, (or rather American and British troops), suffer
many casualties.
Saddam Hussein is killed and his troops defeated but the
peace proves to be as difficult as the war - factional fighting
spreads and the country is torn apart.
Arab countries are in revolt against the infidel oppressors,
with Egypt and Jordan teetering upon the brink.
2) Best case scenario.
The war against Iraq is over within a week or so.
Saddam Hussein uses some chemical weapons but both the Allies
and Israel are prepared for such an attack. Israel’s
response is limited but lethal.
Demonstrations
erupt in Arab capitals but remain restrained after the relatively
quick defeat of Iraq. Militant Arabs realize that the US
will fight back thus ending the notion, (after the Somalia
debacle), that the US is weak and has not got the stomach
for an all out war.
A popular Democratic government is set up in Iraq.
Neighboring country Iran begins to feel pressure that they
may be the next on the list to suffer American aggression
and offers an olive branch in order to avoid hostilities,
democracy on the move - extremism on the run.
Climate set for peaceful solution to the Israeli/Palestinian
conflict.
Both scenarios are unlikely, but possible.
One thing for certain is that doing nothing is not an option.
David.
