John writes from Canada. (Letter #2).
I
really enjoyed your recent column, but am surprised that
you didn’t make more of the loss of American Civil
rights since the September 11th incident, which brought
into force the restriction of rights that the American public
have enjoyed since the writing of the Constitution.
As a non-American citizen I think the new laws have been
overdone and the restrictions imposed give the law enforcement
agencies far more power than they require and will have
far reaching consequences for current and future generations
of Americans.
With respect to the subject of the possible torture of
political detainees, hasn’t the American Government
set the scene to use such means of interrogation by using
the new law to detain people secretly without legal representation,
or without charges being made, for as long as deemed necessary?
The general consensus here in Canada is that the George
Bush threats against Iraq is all a matter of a personal
vendetta to complete what George Bush Senior failed to do
and has really nothing to do with weapons of mass destruction.
