An ex-Brit gives his views-(without fear
or favor)---of the American Scene
Last word.
President Bush in a recent speech stated that after the
war with Iraq, the United States would be responsible for
rebuilding the country. Should I add 'in the United States
image'!!!
The cost of the war to the United States, is estimated to
be in excess of $100B so shall we assume that the rebuilding
process will be more than double that amount and take numerous
years to complete.
President Bush may be able to rebuild the cities that he
destroys, but he certainly cannot resurrect the dead, unless
of course he thinks that he can walk on water or feed the
multitude with five loaves and two fishes, two biblical
events which I have great difficulty in believing.
After
World War Two, the Allies paid reparations to both Germany
and Japan in order for the two enemies to rebuild their
destroyed real estate and their manufacturing plants. Subsequently
both countries became highly successful competitors to the
countries who won the fighting war and proved to one and
all that it’s not the countries that win the war who
are the eventual victors, but the countries that win the
peace!!!
Thought for today.
Quote from a William Shakespeare play, Julius Caesar: “The
evil that men do lives after them, the good is of interred
in their bones”
A word of thanks.
Thanks go to all three of the correspondents who wrote
to me, for allowing me to publish their letters---for surely,
as David would say, this is ‘democracy at work’.
Or on the other hand, to quote a phrase which appears to
be in universal usage these days, “I love my country
but fear my government”.
Sincerely.
