(Presidential Election Special - 2004)
An ex-Brit gives his views - (without
fear or favor) - of the American Scene
The
country is badly and sadly divided:
America is divided as never before and perhaps
could be likened to the divided nation of the Civil
War era.
What can be done about it? One thing I would suggest:
The time has come to re-think the Electoral College and
make changes such that votes be allocated by percentage
and not the winner take all situation that currently
exists.
The current procedure is that the Electoral College of each State gives the
entire Electoral votes of their state to the candidate who wins the State election.
This of course disenfranchises the people who voted for the losing candidate.
America has always prided itself on being a leading
example in the field of advanced technology and yet it
has the most diverse and inadequate voting system in
the world. Many so-called Third World Nations have been
said to have better and more advanced modern voting systems.
Worldwide opinion
The European news
media have greeted the American Presidential election
results with a degree of derision and one more time the
American people have become a laughing stock.
The front page one lower echelon British newspaper stated,
"How can so many people be so dumb" and
on the other end of the scale a leading upper echelon
British newspaper had a complete full page in solid black
print with a caption in the middle saying, "Oh
God".
