(Presidential Election Special - 2004)
An ex-Brit gives his views-(without fear
or favor)---of the American Scene
Looking
back in retrospect at the American Presidential election:
This
was a hard fought battle with the Democratic Party
decrying the dictatorial actions taken over the last
four years by the incumbent President and vowed to make
sweeping social changes, which would be beneficial to
the American middle and working classes.
The Republican Party relied heavily upon the desire of what some people would
call misguided publics action in order to not be classified as unpatriotic
in time of war by denying support to their President.
Social and religious issues in the mid-west Bible belt
on subjects such as abortion, stem cell research, same
sex marriages, etc, prompted them to vote for the incumbent
President. Apparently the social issues out-weighed in
their minds the affects of future potential terrorist
acts upon American soil, the terrible consequences of
the war in Iraq, the effects upon the American workforce
by the outsourcing of jobs, the lack of and the spiralling cost of health
care, also possible retrograde changes to social security
benefits which the incumbent President stated he would
undertake.
The
Democratic party must be faulted and take a big hit for not doing its job
as the loyal opposition party during the last four years and challenging
the incumbent majority when ever obvious mistakes were being made. This
is not Monday morning quarter backing, this is a realistic governmental
requirements for an opposition party to challenge the majority party when
they consider that actions being taken by the Government in power are detrimental
to the welfare of the public at large.
For instance: Did the Democrats challenge the Bush Administration
and the Bush Presidency for the go-it-alone unilateral
actions to declare war against Iraq in apparent retribution
for the terrorist acts upon American soil on the 11th
of September, 2001? Hell no, they didn’t vote against
this action - they all lined up meek and mild and supported
an act that was a violation of international law in
which there was no indication that Iraq was involved
in terrorism against the United States.
As I said the Democratic Party was weak when it voted
to support a war that was morally unjustified for the
reasons given by the American President and his Administration
in a war which has turned out to be a nightmarish quagmire
for both the American and Iraqi people.
This is only
one instance of the lack of opposition by the Democrats
to decisions made by the Republican Government that has
caused irreparable damage to the values held sacred by
the American people since the inception of this country
some 200 plus years ago. This degradation of American
values is destroying the American way of life and many
fine people have been mortally wounded both physically
and morally in the process.
