Will this be the winter of our discontent?
Portland, Oregon, 23rd August 2002.
Hundreds
of protestors attended a demonstration against President
Bush’s foreign policy, (or lack of it), outside a
hotel where Mr. Bush was soliciting funds for the election
campaign of US Senator Gordon Smith. The protestors were
met by riot police, who it was reported, used pepper gas
spray and batons in an attempt to disperse them.
Is this the beginning of a grass roots protest effort, (as
was experienced during the Vietnam war era), to protest
the “potential loss of American lives”?
I believe that the winter months will see more demonstrations
of a similar sort, if the sabre rattling continues.
I was just thinking --- (well I do sometimes) --- if we
brought all our military personnel home from their far flung
foreign outpost assignments, what would we do with them.
The first thing would be to find them employment, which
is not easy for ex-servicemen with little or no civilian
employment skills.
Of course they could be readily, and immediately, employed
in protecting our own 'Swiss cheese' borders.
George Orwell, in his book 1984, theorized that the economies
of the world revolve around war or threat of war---well
Mr. Bush has got that part right, even if he doesn’t
know it. Wonder if he ever heard of, or read any of George
Orwell’s prophetic books.
What If???
1) What if Saudi Arabia suddenly pulled out the many billions
of dollars they have invested in the United States stock
market.
2) What if the oil producing countries stop delivering the
Liquid Gold to the United States in retaliation for the
threat of war.
3) What if Mr. Putin reaches an agreement with Iraq on the
proposed multi-billion dollar economic cooperation program.
4) What if China decides to invade Taiwan. (What will Mr.
Bush do then, poor thing.)
5) What if a major terrorist action occurs in the United
States perpetrated by local home grown militants.
Unfortunately, I don’t have the answers---Only the
questions. !!!
