August 5th
Huddersfield Town and Middlesborough have concluded negotiations
to bring Boro defender Steve Baker to Huddersfield on a month's
loan. The final decision rests with the player himself. meanwhile
Town have announced the signing of goalkeeper Martyn Margetson as
understudy to Nico Vaesen. Margetson was formerly with Southend
United.
August 1st
With only seven days to go before the start of the new season the
Terriers suffered another setback when they were beaten 5 goals
to 2 at the McAlpine Stadium by Premiership team Middlesborough.
Boro scored first through Andy Campbell on 30 minutes but Town equalised
with a goal by Chris Beech 40 seconds later. Campbell and debutant
Paul Ince made it 3-1 before the interval. On 73 minutes Campbell
completed his hattrick from the penalty spot after being brought
down by Jamie Vincent. Town grabbed a late goal through Danny Schofield
before Paul Gascoine completed the scoring. So it's back to the
drawaing board for manager Paul Ince. As an ex-defender himself
he will want to ensure that his defence will not leak as many goals
when the games are for real.
July 29th
Town were outclassed by Premiership team Leeds United as they went
down by 5 goals to 0 at the McAlpine Stadium in front of a crowd
of over 18,000. There was cause for optimism in the first 30 minutes
as Town went close to scoring first through Scott Sellars but his
shot was saved well by Nigel Martyn. Marcus Stewart also had the
chance to give Town the lead but put his shot wide. Leeds scored
in the 33rd minute and went in at half time with that one goal lead.
In the second half it was all leeds and four more goals gave Steve
Bruce something to think about before Saturdays clash with Premiership
side Middlesborough.
July 25th
New striker Clive Wijnhard topped the scoring list with
a hat trick as the Terriers defeated Swedish fourth division part-timers
Burtrask by 9 goals to 0. Other scorers were Barry Horne, Danny
Schofield (2), Dwayne Mattis, Kenny Irons and Chris Beech. Town
will be given a sterner test next Wednesday when they take on Leeds
United in a pre-season friendly. Also coming up is a friendly against
Middlesborough next Saturday.
July 22nd
Back to square one with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Umea.
A tired looking Town made a number of basic mistakes, both in attack
and in defence. To add to the Terriers woe goalkeeper Nico Vaesen
has had to fly home with a knee injury and Steve Jenkins looks as
if he will miss the first two months after an operation on his ankle.
July 20th
We are pleased to report a victory for the Terriers in Sweden. With
goals from Kenny Irons (2), Marcus Stewart, Wayne Allison and local
teenager Danny Schofield a 5-1 victory was assured. Despite a shaky
start when Pitea IF scored after 9 minutes through Jorgren Berggren,
Town soon took control with Irons particularly impressive in midfield.
Clyde Wijnhard has now joined the squad and has participated in
his first training session. The big question is will his arrival
at the club hasten the departure of Wayne Allison or will manager
Bruce retain a large squad? All will be revealed in due course.
July 19th
Town today signed Dutch striker Clyde Wijnhard from neighbours Leeds
United. Costing 750,000 pounds and signing a three year contract
Wijnhard will join Huddersfields tour of Sweden in time for Wednesdays
match against Umea. The first of the three matches is tonight against
Pitea. Rumour still abounds about old favourite Andy Booth rejoining
the club if he is willing to drop down a division. Watch this space
for further details.
July 18th
Despite dominating play in this first pre-season match Town
could only manage a draw with Scarborough at the McCain Stadium.
All of the new signings impressed with their performances but George
Donis and Kenny Irons shone out as being prominent players for the
new season. Scarborough had a trialist goalkeeper to thank for stopping
the Terriers from scoring, pulling at least two great saves out
of thin air! Roll on the tour of Sweden as the team play toghether
and gel.
July 17th
The first pre-season friendly is to be played today, away against
Scarborough. The squad then fly out on their Scandinavian tour.
Watch this space for results from all of these matches. Meanwhile
there is no news on the transfer front and it is reported that current
striker Wayne Allison has turned down a move to Preston North End.
Apparently he couldn't agree personal terms with the club.
July 11th
Very little happening at the moment. The team started training for
the new season last Monday. New contracts have been signed by Steve
Jenkins and Delroy Facey which tie them to the club well into the
next millenium. There are strong rumours that Town are about to
sign a Dutch striker from Leeds United for 1 million pounds but
confirmation has not come through yet. There are also rumours linking
Andy Booth with the Terriers. An ex-Town player he was Town's record
transfer when he went to Sheffield Wednesday a couple of seasons
ago. Wednesday are actively chasing two new strikers so his future
at Wednesday could be somewhat limited. He was certainly the crowd's
favourite at Huddersfield and he is a local lad made good.
June 25th
John Deehan has been appointed as Assistant Manager, a
post he held under Steve Bruce whilst they were both at Sheffield
United.
June 21st
Another signing for the Terriers as Scott Sellars signs
a two year contract. The 33 year old midfielder joins Town on a
free transfer, under the Bosman ruling, from First Division rivals
Bolton Wanderers. His wealth of experience and skills should prove
an asset when the new season starts.
June 14th
Huddersfield have announced the signing of Tranmere Rovers
midfielder, Kenny Irons, on a four-year contract. Costing in the
region of 500,000 pounds, this is Steve Bruce's third signing since
becoming manager of Town. 28 year-old Irons is renowned for his
tough tackling and attacking from midfield and was skipper at Prenton
Park, scoring 18 goals for his old club last season.
June 11th
Town today signed central defender Chris Lucketti from Bury for
750,000 pounds. Lucketti was rated as one of the best defenders
in Division 1 last season. He has been awarded a 4-year contract.
Bury will have to pay Halifax Town 25% of the transfer fee as part
of the sell-on clause negotiated when Lucketti left The Shay for
Gigg Lane.
June 9th
There is talk in the press of another transfer target for
The Terriers. David Weatherall is the player and his current club,
Leeds United, have accepted a two million pounds tranfer fee with
Town. The player himself, a central defender, is reputed to be negotiating
personal terms and will not be rushed in his decision. Although
Huddersfield have Premiership ambitions, a transfer to the club
would mean a drop down a division.
June 7th
Huddersfield Town announced their first new signing under
the manegership of Steve Bruce over the weekend. 29 year old right
winger George Donis signed a three year contract after joining the
club on a free transfer (under the Bosman ruling) from Greek side
AEK Athens. The various fees attached to the signing of the contract
and associated signing on fees are expected to cost Town one million
pounds. Donis played at Blackburn for a time alongside Alan Shearer
and is looking forward to helping Town to gain Premiership status.
June 2nd
After an eventful weekend of play-off finals at Wembley Stadium
it has emerged that Town will be renewing acquaintances with some
old adversaries. Watford beat Bolton Wanderers in the First Division
play-offsand Manchester City emerged victorious over Gillingham
after the Second Division final. This will ensure
that there will be at least two good home attendance figures when
these two visit the McAlpine Stadiumnext season. Manchester City
will be remembered for their record thrashing of Town in 1987 when
they triumphed 10-1! Bolton have a stadium which was designed by
the same architects (The Lobb Partnership) as Huddersfield used
when they built the McAlpine.
May 31st
It has been confirmed that, in the warm-up to the start
of the new season, Town will play games against Middlesborough and
Leeds United plus go on a 3 match Scandinavian tour. Leeds will
visit the McAlpine stadium on Wednesday, July 28th and Middlesborough
on July 31st. Prior to this Town, who start pre-season training
on July 5th, will set off on their visit to Sweden on July 18th.
All in all the month of July will prove to be a hectic one but will
aid the fitness of the squad in preparation for the new season.
May 28th
Peter Jackson's old assistant manager, Terry Yorath, has
left the club just two weeks after Jackson himself. Steve Bruce
is now on the lookout for a new assistant but the odds look good
on it being John Deehan, his number two at Sheffield United. Coach
Terry Dolan and Chief Scout Colin Lee will continue in their present
positions for the time being. Watch out for a new signing in the
not-too-distant future. Rumours have been circulating about Mark
Hughes, Bruce's old friend from when they were both players at Manchester
United, joining the club from Southampton but there is no confirmation
as yet.
May 24th
Town have announced the signing of Steve Bruce as manager on a three
year contract! With 8 million pounds to spend (more if the sale
of Barry Rubery's shares in Pace Technologies supplement the kitty)
then Bruce, who recently resigned as manager of Sheffield United,
can have no excuses for not improving the position of Town next
season. Indeed he has probably been given a brief that allows for
a play-off place as the minimum expectation of the board of directors.
May 15thSpeculation continues to grow about
the appointment of a new manager but the board of directors are
keeping their cards close to their chests. The only comment, from
the Managing Director, has been that there is now a short list of
four candidates. Meanwhile it has been confirmed that Marcus Stewart
has signed a 3 year extension to his contract which means that Towns'
star striker is tied to the club until the summer of 2003.
The local newspaper has been deluged with correspondence about the
sacking of Peter Jackson. The majority offer their
sympathy to the popular ex-manager and player but there is a consensus
that Town need a more experienced chief if they are to make a serious
attempt at a place amongst the elite in the Premiership.
May 10th Huddersfield Town manager Peter
Jackson has paid the price for a poor post Christmas performance
by the team and has beensacked by the club! There
is immediate speculation that ex-Liverpool manager Roy Evans and
Sheffield United manager Steve Bruce are front runners for the vacant
job. Managing Director, Ian Ayre, has publicly thanked Jackson for
his work at the club but stated that Town are in need of a high
profile boss in their quest for Premiership football next season.
