Closed Season 2001
June/July/August 2001
August 9th
Town announced the signing of Gareth Evans on a free transfer
from Leeds United.
The 20 year old defender is the only signing by Lou Macari
during the closed season.
Five players have been released or sold by the club this
summer which means that Town made a gain of £850,000
whilst dramatically lowering the wage bill.
August 3rd
On a warm Friday evening Town took on Grimsby in the final pre-season
friendly and emerged victors thanks to two goals from Chris Hay.
The goals, at the start of either half, saw the Terriers make
light of the divisional difference between the two clubs and
also must have reminded Lou Macari that Hay is a striking
option before the start of the new season next Saturday.
Once again Town played four triallists in the match, De Amicis
starting the game and Baldin, Christof and Le Grux appearing
as subsitutes.
July 31st
Town suffered their first defeat of the pre-season when they
were beaten by two goals to nil by Manchester City in Jonathan Dyson's
testimonial game.
Kevin Keegan's team were the more accomplished of the two
teams and goals on either side of half time settled the match
in favour of the Manchester team. Paulo Wanchope scored on
43 minutes, firing the ball home through a crowd of players,
whilst Shaun Goater scored the second just after the break
when Danny Tiatto slid the ball through for Goater to fire
past Margetson.
City had spent a lot of the match camped in the Terriers half
and had other chances to increase their winning margin but
a combination of the offside flag, good goalkeeping and poor
finishing foiled their efforts.
Town too had their chances but also saw chances go begging,
the best falling to Andy Booth in the third minute but his
header, from a Jenkins cross, was well saved by Nash in the
City goal.
Another positive for the Terriers to take away from the game
was the performance of Margetson in goal and the promise shown
by a couple of the triallists on view. Marcus Stergopolous
lined up with his fellow Australian Di Amicis and gave a steady
performance but the crowd too a shine to Frederick Biancalani,
a Frenchman from Nancy who showed deft touches on the ball
and was not afraid of coming forward from his position at
left back.
The biggest winner of the night though was loyal defender
Jonathan Dyson who stands to collect around £30,000
from the gate receipts, the attendance was 8,106. Dyson is
in his 10th year with Huddersfield, his only club.
Town: Margetson, Jenkins, Stergopolous (Irons 58), Armstrong,
Lucketti, Gray, Beech, Holland, Booth, Facey, Di Amicis (Biancalani
58).
July 28th
Town were held to a 0 - 0 draw by Lincoln city in a game which
saw 5 triallists turn out for the Terriers. Huddersfield, an in
particular Delroy Facey, looked the most likely to win the game
but failed to take their chances on a hot summers afternoon.
Early in the second half Lou Macari introduced Michael Baldin,
Phillppe Burle, Preget and Gunter Kreissl, a goalkeeper.
Town: Margetson (Kreissl 60), Heary, De Amicis (Schofield
76), Armstrong, Lucketti, Moses, Holland (Burle 60), Irons
(Thorrington 76), Booth (Baldin 76), Facey (Macari 76), Hay
(Preget 60)
July 25th
Halifax Town were the latest team to succumb to the Terriers
as a penalty from Kenny Irons and an Andy Booth header settled
the game, played at The Shay. Both sides had their chances
to score but in this pre-season friendly it was Huddersfield
who managed to take their chances.
As an aside Town played an Australian triallist, Fausto De
Amicis for the full 90 minutes and will probably give the
32-year-old defender another game when Town take on Lincoln
this Saturday.
July 21st
In the third match of their pre-season tour Town managed
a 0-0 draw against Cheltenham Town. By all accounts the game
was a boring affair with chances on goal few and far between.
July 19th
Town continued their pre-season training in Devon with
a 4-1 win over Dawlish. Scorers for Town were Nat Brown, Paul
Macari (2) and Kevin Gray.
The significant moments of the match were the return from
injury of Kenny Irons, Chris Beech and Chris Lucketti. Unfirtunately
on the down side both Martin Smith and Simon Baldry missed
the game through injury.
July 19th
Dean Gorre is set to move to neighbours Barnsley as of this
afternoon providing he passes a medical. The 30-year-old Dutchman
was unsettled at the club following their relagation to Division
2 but returned for pre-season training and drove up from the team
camp in Devon when informed of the Tykes interest.
First team coach John Deehan has also parted company with
the club, by mutual consent. Deehan has returned to Aston
Villa. Patrick Stewart (of Star Trek fame) has been approached
by David Taylor with a view to investing in the club if the
proposed takeover goes through. Stewart has promised to give
the offer serious consideration.
July 18th
Jonathan Dyson ended speculation about his immediate future
when he signed a one year contract with the club. This will
ensure that he will be at the club throughout his testimonial
season
July 17th
The Terriers beat Exeter City by four goals to one in a practice
match in Devon. The scorers were Delroy Facey, Andy Booth, John
Thorrington and Paul Macari.
The only downside were an ankle injury sustained by Simon
Baldry.

pre-season tour to Devon this weekend. They will play at least
one friendly against Exeter City.
July 12th
Town manager, Lou Macari has been fined £1000 and warned
about his future conduct after appearing before an F.A. disciplinary
hearing in Birmingham.
Macari was charged with using foul and abusive language towards
a match official in the away game against Portsmouth last
December 16th. A charge of violent conduct was dropped.

the August 3rd friendly against Huddersfield Town at Blundell

June 25th
Huddersfield Town officially announced that Barry Rubery will
be stepping down as owner of the club in favour of a local consortium
made up of businessman lead by former Vice-Chairman David Taylor.
Mr Rubery has stated that he wished to concentrate more on
his overseas business interests and will not be investing
any more money into the club.
"Despite the fact that I have invested heavily in the
club, because of my other overseas commitments, I have not
had the time available needed to head the club," Rubery
told Huddersfield Town's Official web site (www.htafc.com).
"The involvement of David Taylor and his team would
result in a more hands-on approach to the club.
"Suffice to say that both parties will be working hard
over the next couple of weeks to bring the deal to a conclusion."
Taylor said: ''I am looking forward to the challenge, I have
some extremely good people with me already but I need additional
investors to strengthen the board."
It is believed that Mr Rubery will remain on the board in
some capacity but that Mr Taylor will take over as chairman.
The reaction of the fans was one of both relief that Mr Rubery
had stepped down but also concern that the new consortium
would have insufficient funds to invest in the club.
June 21st
The Terriers have been given a home tie in the first game
of the new season. They meet AFC Bournemouth at the McAlpine
Stadium on Saturday, August 11th.
Other important fixtures include a home game against Peterborough
on Boxing Day, Wednesday December 26th, an away tie at Wycombe
Wanderers on Tuesday, January 1st and a home tie against Oldham
Athletic on Easter Monday, April 1st.
June 20th
Following a nine month layoff, caused by his involvement
in a serious car accident, striker Clyde Wijnhard has been
given the all clear to resume full training. The news is sure
to give Town fans a boost as they prepare for life in the
Second Division.
June 19th
Huddersfield Town drew Rochdale in the first round of
the Worthington Cup. The tie, to be played at the McAlpine
Stadium, will be played on Tuesday August 21st.
This is the first time that the preliminary rounds of the
Worthing ton Cup will consist of only one round per tie.
June 18th
Huddersfield Town have announced that goalkeeper Nico Vaesen
has been sold to Birmingham City for a transfer fee of £750,000.
The keeper originally cost the club £80,000 from Belgian
club Eendracht Aalst and was reportedly reluctant to leave
the club where he had spent three happy years, missing only
four games in the process.
Vaesens departure means that Town have unloaded 8 players
since February as the club prepares for the Second Division,
and the lower revenue that will come in to the club as they
drop down a league.
May 2001
May 26th
Defender Jonathan Dyson has undergone successful back
surgery and has been offered a one-year contract.
May 22nd
Huddersfield Town announced the departure of three players, winger
Ben Thornley, striker Kevin Gallen and winger David Beresford. All
three players were given freedom to seek new clubs as their contracts
came to an end.
It was expected that a number of players would be released
as Town tighten their belts following their relegation to
Division 2.
