1 - SEASON 1998-1999
SEASON STATISTICS
Town's leading goalscorer for the season was Marcus Stewart with
26 in all competitions. The average home attendance for the season
was 12,976 compared to 12,145 for the 97/98 season - an increase
of 6.8%. On the disciplinary front Town players received 63 yellow
cards and 5 red cards which made them 9th in the divisions list
of "bad boys". Rob Edwards made most appearances in
the league games with a total of 45 out of a possible 46.
May 9th
A game that sums up the season as Town are held to a 0-0
draw by Crewe Alexandra. Despite having most of the possession
and some clear cut goal-scoring opportunities, the Terriers
spurned their chances leaving themselves 10th in the table.

The top two teams gain automatic promotion
at the end of the season. The four teams below them play of
in a semi-final, final format - the winner being promoted
along with the top two. Town gained promotion from the Second
Division via the play-offs some 5 years ago, beating Bristol
Rovers at Wembley by 2-1
May 8th
On the eve of the final match of the season there have been no further
developments with the playing staff at Huddersfield. With a significant
number of injuries it seems that a few of the up-and-coming youngsters
will get their chance to impress. Season ticket details for the
season 1999/2000 have been released with a minor price rise equating
to one pound per match in all areas.
May 2nd
In the penultimate game of the season Town manage a 2-2 draw away
at Crystal Palace. Palace took the lead in the 10th minute through
Morrison but Huddersfield replied through John Dyson in the 33rd
minute (a rare goal for the full-back) and took the lead with a
penalty from Marcus Stewart in the 40th minute. After the break
Palace drew level on 58 minutes with a second goal for Morrison.
April 25th
Another dire performance by The Terriers saw them go
down 1-0 at home to Barnsley, who beat them 7-1 in the away fixture
earlier in the season. After a promising first ten minutes when
Town played fluent, attacking football, their play deteriorated
and allowed Barnsley to punish them by scoring in the 20th minute
through Mike Sheron.Thereafter Huddersfield didn't really look like
scoring although there was some hard work from Baldry and Stewart.
In front of a good crowd of 15,353 the home team looked badly out
of sorts and, with only two games of the season left, are obviously
looking forward to the summer break.
April 18th
The Terriers upset the form book by beating automatic promotion
hopefuls Bradford City by 3 goals to 2 in a hard fought away game
.Bradford took the lead through Blake in the 8th minute
but Town replied through Marcus Stewart (22 minutes), Wayne Allison
(24 minutes) and Ben Thornley (36 minutes). After half time Town
had Steve Jenkins sent off for simulating a head butt on an opposition
player but the 10 man team managed to hang on until the 72nd minute
before Dean Windass got a second for Bradford. To add insult to
injury Town's goalkeeper, Nico Vaesen, saved a penalty kick from
Windass after Simon Baldry had been adjudged to have handled the
ball in his own penalty area. The lads in blue and white then managed
to reach the final whistle without conceding any more goals thus
giving them a rare away victory against their local rivals.
April 11th
Showing too much respect for the league leaders and champions-in-waiting,
Town succumbed to two first half goals to maintain a run of seven
games without a win. In front of a crowd of 41,074 Sunderland took
the lead in the 28th minute through veteran Niall Quinn and then
went further ahead on the 41st minute with a goal by Allan Johnston.
Whilst Ian Lawson did have a chance to put Town into the lead early
on in the game, it was Sunderland who controlled the game and emerged
worth victors. This result finally killed of any hopes they had of
reaching the and has effectively ended the season for the Terriers.
No promotion and, more importantly, no relegation battle is the
order of the day and now we will have to wait what the summer break
brings with a view to them mounting a promotion attempt in the 1999/2000
season. A new millennium, a new division? Certainly the current
team is not good enough for promotion so the much vaunted transfer
funds will have to utilised, and utilised well.
April 6th
Another terrible home performance leads to a 1-2 defeat
at the hands of lowly Swindon Town. The excuse could be that
, with injuries and suspensions Town had to play certain team
members out of position but really the majority of the players
were completely out of sorts! The team were eventually booed
off at full time by a good proportion of the 11,719 crowd.
Swindon took the lead through midfielder Howe on the 19th
minute and , after the break, went two up in the 67th minute
with a goal by substitute Chris Hay. Town substitute Ian Lawson
managed to pull a goal back in the 79th minute - his second
goal in two appearances after his recall, from loan, at Blackpool.
This was only the second home defeat of the season and Peter
Jackson has finally conceded that a play-off place was out
of the Terriers reach.
April 4th
Town rebound from two setbacks to gain a draw at Queens Park
Rangers. The London club take the lead in the 51st minute
and then Huddersfield have central defender Kevin Gray sent
off in the 52nd. The terriers then manage to score through
young attacker Ian Lawson in the 79th minute to earn a point
at a ground where they had been beaten in all six previous
league games they had ever played there.Once again Town's
away form has let them down and the league table shows that
any chance of a play-off place have realistically evaporated.
This has been evident in the press releases that have emanated
from the McAlpine Stadium over the last couple of weeks. The
general consensus has been that the manager will bide his
time on new signings, perhaps rebuilding the squad in the
summer with a view to a concerted effort to gain Premiership
status next season. There has been talk of a two-tier transfer
money kitty with the majority of available cash being allotted
for key squad players whilst a secondary kitty is being reserved
for signing players with potential. When the new owner, Barry
Rubery, took over the club he stated that it was his intention
to initiate a youth academy in order to plan for the future.
Meanwhile there are six games to go before the end of the
season, three at home and three away. Watch this space
for results.
March 25th
A dreadful display by Town ended in a 1-1 draw against
Norwich City at the McAlpine Stadium in front of this season's
lowest League attendance of 9,717. Norwich took the lead through
Darel Russel in only the 3rd minute and had their goalkeeper,
Andy Marshall, sent off in the 8th minute. A resolute City
defence managed to hold out until the 83rd minute, with defender
Daryl Such standing in as goalkeeper in the absence of Marshall.
Indeed Such was called upon to make a couple of fine saves
in his unfamiliar role. The equalising goal had a stroke of
fortune about it as the ball somehow found the Norwich net
after a corner by Ben Thornley was deflected into his own
net by Paul Hughes. This result means that Huddersfield's
play-off hopes have faded even further into the distance.
Town today signed 23 year old defender Jamie Vincent
from AFC Bournemouth. The highly rated left back signed a
contract which runs to the end of the 2001-02 season. Town
will initially pay £200,000 for Vincent though
this could could reach £500,000 depending on appearances.
At the same time David Phillips was allowed to join Lincoln
City on a free transfer.
Town jet out on a 5 day training camp break to Spain this
Friday, March 16th.
March 21st
A tale of two halves as Town drag out a 1-1 draw at home to
Birmingham City. City took the lead through Johnson in the
47th minute but Town equalised in the 55th with a ferocious
shot from Delroy Facey. A crowd of 14,667 witnessed a stalemate
in the first half but the second half burst into life after
Birmingham scored. This result means that Huddersfield move
up one place to 9th. Next match is on Wednesday next at home
to Norwich.
March 19th
Due to injury Town will be without David Phillips and David
Beresford for tomorrows vital home clash with high-flying
Birmingham City. Meanwhile this is the last match of midfielder
Des Hamilton's loan spell and manager Peter Jackson will have
to think about extending his loan period. David Phillips has
been told that he will be released by the club at the end
of the season. The Republic of Ireland have called up Huddersfield's
Thomas Heary for the World Youth Championship in Nigeria next
month. Steve Jenkins is also named in the Welsh Squad for
the forthcoming European Championship games.
March 16th
Huddersfield have transferred striker Paul Barnes to Division
1 rivals Bury for £40,000
March 14th
Back to the drawing board as the Terriers crash at
Ipswich Town by 3 goals to 0. A dire display see them fall
to tenth in the table. Afterwards manager Peter Jackson admits
that new signings will have to be made if Town are to make
a serious challenge for a play-off place.
March 11th
Popular Town left-back Tom Cowan has been loaned to
Burnley for the rest of the season with a view to a permanent
transfer after being told that he did not fit into the managers
plans for the future. This is certain to prove unpopular with
the supporters.
March 10th
Town temporarily banish the away-day blues with a
2-2 draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers. They come from behind
twice with goals from Marcus Stewart and Ben Thornley.
March 6th
A fine display of control and passing leads to a
3-0 victory over Stockport County as Town consolidate their
position of 8th in the Division 1 table. Second half goals
from Jenkins and Stewart(2) gives Town a boost in confidence
prior to their visits to Oxford United (Tuesday) and Ipswich
Town (Saturday) in the coming seven days. Given that the Terriers
away form leaves a lot to be desired, it is vital that Town
come away with something from these two games if they are
to remain on course for the play-offs.
March 3rd
It's another home victory and a good one too. The vanquished
are Bolton Wanderers and the score is 3-2 to the Terriers!
As Bolton were above Town in the table this is an extremely
important result and Town rise to 8th in the table. Goals
come from Stewart, Armstrong and Hamilton.
February 27th
Huddersfield manage a creditable draw away from home at Wolverhampton
Wanderers. The final score is 2-2 with goals from defender
Kevin Gray in the 59th minute and on-loan (from Newcastle
United) midfielder Des Hamilton in the 90th minute. Unfortunately
Gray also scored an own goal in the 64th minute. The home
side had taken the lead in the 10th minute.Wolves were unbeaten
at home since last September whereas Town have won so far
this year. The forecast was a home win but Town came away
with a point. Huddersfield have now slipped to 12th position
in the First Division and have to improve quickly if they
are to make the play-offs for a place in the Premiership
February 25th
Huddersfield sign Chris Armstrong, a defender, from
Nottingham Forest for £750,000 plus a sell on clause
whereby Forest would receive 30% of any future transfer profit.
February 25th
The end of the F.A. Cup dream for another year as
Town lose to Derby County by 3 goals to 1. In a pulsating
cup tie Huddersfield took the lead with a Chris Beech header
but eventually class took it's toll and Derby scored through
Baiano (2) and Dorigo. With a share of the gate receipts of
around £100,000, the game was not without it's plus
points.
February 21st
Another poor performance from the boys in blue and white saw
them held to a goalless draw at home to Tranmere Rovers. Scrappy
play and poor passing limited Town to few chances although,
overall, they had the best of the play. A crowd 11,411 could
barely suppress their dissatisfaction with this performance
and hope that thing will improve by Wednesday, when they replay
Derby in the 5th round of the FA Cup. To cap off a dismal
day Town's central defender, Jonathan Dyson, was sent off
near the end.
February 19th
Huddersfield have been ordered to pay Hartlepool
£65,000 for midfielder Chris Beech by The Football League's
Appeal Committee. This could rise to £95,000 depending
on how many appearances Beech makes for the Terriers. There
is also a sell-on clause whereby Hartlepool would receive
20% of any future transfer fee for the player.
February 18th
Town managed to draw 1-1 with high placed Watford
at Vicarage Road. Chris Beech was Town's scorer. This result
can be seen as a positive one given Huddersfield's dismal
away record.
February 13th
Another memorable day as Town hold the Premiership team, Derby
County to a 2-2 draw in front of a crowd of 22,100 - a record
attendance for a sports fixture at the McAlpine Stadium! Huddersfield
took the lead through Chris Beech in the 43rd minute. After
the break Derby drew level with a Dion Burton goal and then
took the lead with a penalty by Tony Dorigo. The visiting
fans cheers had hardly died down before Marcus Stewart equalised.
The replay will be at Pride Park on Wednesday, February 24th.
February 6th
Huddersfield's away day blues continue after
their latest defeat by lowly Midlands club, Port Vale. Play-off
hopes are taking a downturn after this 2 - 0 defeat, both
goals being scored in the first half.
February 3rd
Town managed to beat Wrexham 2 - 1 to progress
to the fifth round of the FA Cup with goals from Marcus Stewart
and Ben Thornley, setting up a mouth-watering tie with premiership
club Derby County on Saturday, February 13th. The scoreline
flattered the visitors as Town hit the woodwork on four occasions
and had the lions share of the play. The Derby tie has attracted
a great deal of interest from the local supporters and tickets
are selling like hot cakes. Hopefully this should guarantee
a near sell out.
February 1st
Huddersfield will play Wrexham in the Fourth
Round of the F.A. Cup this Wednesday, kick off 7:45 p.m..
Prior to the game there will be a spectacular firework display
to celebrate the takeover by Barry Rubery. If Town prevail
on the night they have drawn Premiership team Derby County
in the next round. This tie will be played on Saturday, February
13th at the McAlpine Stadium.
January 30th
Town were held to a 2-2 draw by lowly Bristol
City. They took the lead twice but conceded sloppy goals almost
immediately. This now leaves them 10th in the Division with
a lot of ground to make up if they are to make the First Division
play-offs this season. The only saving grace from the match
was that winger Ben Thornley made a successful comeback after
a long layoff with a broken bone in his foot.
Manager Peter Jackson made his first signing under the new
ownership. He signed 24 year old Chris Beech from Third Division
Hartlepool. Town offered 20,000 pounds for the midfielder
whereas Hartlepool were asking for 200,000 pound. The fee
will be decided at a tribunal.
Barry Rubery has completed his purchase of 70% of Town shares,
paying 8 million pounds. The former Pace Technology co-founder
has pledged money for team building as Town enter a new era!
Hopefully this will enable the team to mount a challenge for
a play-off place with Premiership ambitions being the main
target. Watch this space for news of signings and releases
as they happen.
