P = Promoted R = Relegated April/May 2001May 6th TERRIERS RELEGATED!A home defeat by Birmingham City and victories for the two other relegation candidates ensured that Town were condemned to play Second Division football next season. The cruel end-of-season lottery saw the Terriers and their supporters crushed by unlikely results at Portsmouth and Crystal Palace and the scoring ability of Woodhouse, even though Town created enough opportunities to have won the game. Huddersfield started the game brightly, Armstrong forcing a save from the Blues keeper as early as the 10th minute. But it was Brimingham who took the lead in the 21st minute when Lazaridis beat two defenders and passed the ball to Woodhouse. He collected the ball and cooly chipped it into the top corner of the goal. Huddersfield continued to press and were unlucky when both Thornley and Botth had efforts which rebounded off the crossbar. As the first half drew to a close Andy Booth stabbed the ball home for the equaliser after the Birmingham City defence had made a hash of clearing a Ben Thornley cross. But the Blues equalised within a matter of seconds when Johnson crossed the ball and Woodhouse headed home. In the second half, as news filtered through that Palace and Pompey were both leading in their games, Town inserted more urgency into their game but it wasn't until the last 10 minutes that they looked like scoring and even then some fine saves by Bennett thwarted the Terriers strikers. It is hard to believe that Huddersfield will be playing in a lower league next season and it looked as though the team had done enough to ensure safety before the kick off. It is even harder for the supporters who had seen their team narrowly miss out on the play-off's just 12 short months ago. But with the advent of a new season and a chance to start afresh after a painful and disappointing year in the history of Huddersfield Town AFC let us hope that the club will rise anew out of the ashes of disaster
May 1st Another valuable point but the fate of the Terriers now rests on the final game of the season against Birmingham City although if Crystal Palace fail to win in any of their two remaining games they will be relegated instead of Town. Town started the game with determination, Simon Baldry in particular causing the Dons defence a few problems but Michael Hughes stuck to his defensive task well and kept the winger well shepherded. Town had the best chance of the first half but Chris Holland shot straight at the keeper with the goal at his mercy. Six minutes into the second half and the first time that reserve keeper Margetson was called upon to do some serious work was when he had to pick the ball out of his net as Wimbledon took the lead through an Ainsworth shot from outside the area. This stung Town into action but they had to wait until 74th minute to equalise. A cross from Steve Jenkins was headed home by Kevin Gallen who had replaced Ben Thornley some 3 minutes earlier. This signalled an onslaught by Town but their strikers were foung guilty of wasting several clear cut chances to wrap up the points and secure thir first division status.
April 16th A deserved draw for the Terriers as both teams fought to gain points but for different reasons. West Brom were looking for at least a point to guarantee their place in the promotion play-off's whilst Town needed the points to stave off the threat of relegation. It was Town who took an early lead when Andy Booth spotted Hoult off his line in the 8th minute and brilliantly chipped the ball over him from 30 yards, much to the delight of the Town faithful! But the lead only lasted nine minutes as Jason Roberts, the Baggies record signing at £2m, was put through by Sneekes and he rounded Vaesen and coolly side-footed the ball home into the empty goal. West Brom then had the chance to take the lead in the 22nd minute but Des Lyttle's 25 yard shot went past the wrong side of the post. After the break Town continued to press the nervous Albion defence and Ben Thornley tested Hoult with a rasping drive which the keeper did well to save. For West Brom Hughes had a gilt-edged chance to seal the points but blaster over the bar when well placed to score.
April 21st An injury time goal from Delroy Facey, his tenth of the season, gave Town three valuable points in their battle to escape the relegation trapdoor whilst condemning Rangers to the Second Division. In an action-packed first half Town had several
chances to score that were either thwarted by goal line clearances
or saves by Harper, Andy Booth being at the heart of the Huddersfield
attack. But it was a cruel twist of fate the enabled the Terriers
to take a 33rd minute lead when Dean Gorre's daisy cutter
from 18 yards took a wicked deflection off a Rangers defender,
putting it beyond the reach of Harper's despairing dive. In the second half the two teams appeared to neutralise
each other and there was little to entertain until the a Baldry
free kick found Chris Lucketti unmarked but the big Town defender
headed straight at the keeper with the goal at his mercy. This defeat condemned QPR to relegation along with tranmere but Town still have a fight to keep out of the last relegation spot and this could last until the final game of the season against Birmingham.
April 16th Resilient defending was not enough to earn Town a point in this incident-packed game at Ewood Park as Town lost keeper Nico Vaesen after he was sent off for deliberate hand ball and Armstrong was denied an equaliser by the woodwork. Town were more than a match for Rovers in the
first half with Lucketti a rock at the back and Facey creating
one or two problems for the home defence and it took a lapse
in concentration by the defence to allow Flitcroft through
in the 31st minute for the opening goal. Then five minutes after the break Vaesen was sent
off for deliberate hand ball although a televised replay showed
that he was only protecting his face. This was Vaesens second
mistake in two games as he rushed from his line to try to
intercept Jansen as he raced onto a through ball. Then in the 70th minute and against the run of play Armstrong chested a cross down and beat Friedel with his shot - only to see the ball hit the inside of the Blackburn and rebound to safety. This was Town's only real chance of the second half and Rovers finally secured the points when Jansen hit the ball past Margetson in the last minute of the game. Town have played two games against the top two clubs in the division and lost both but have accredited themselves well and if they can continue with this kind of gritty performane they should just about manage to beat the drop into the second.
April 14th There were no real suprises as top-of-the-table Fulham confirmed their promotion with this comfortable victory at the McAlpine Stadium. The visitors dominated the first half and restricted Town to just one serious effort on goal, an Armstrong shot that was well saved by the keeper. At the other end the Cottagers made the defence earn their wages as they carefully built from midfield and put Vaesen's goal under pressure. After the break it took a penalty to give Fulham the lead as Saha slotted home from the spot in the 66th minute. Two minutes later Clark could have wrapped the points up for Fulham but spurned a golden opportunity. Then, in the 78th minute, Town equalised when Delroy Facey beat Kit Symons and slotted the ball home past Hahnemann from 10 yards out. However this only delayed the inevitable and in the 85th minute Boa Morte raced down the left , rounded Vaesen who had rushed out of his goal to try to intercept Finnan's pass, and slotted the ball into the back of the empty net to set the scene for the end-of-game champagne celebrations. So Town are still not safe from relegation whilst Fulham need only gain one more point from their remaining games to confirm their status as Champions of the First Division. It is going to be a nail-biting time for the Terriers supporters and this could go right to the wire before Town find out their fate!
April 10th Once again the Terriers managed to come away with a point against a higher placed team against the odds. And this time they had Nico Vaesen to thank as he made two crucial saves from on-loan striker Richard Creswell. The first half saw both sides starting tentatively with Preston shading possession and threatening Town's goal albeit very seldomly. The second half offered much of the same in a dour match that offered very little entertainment value to the crowd. Whilst Lou Macari was pleased that his team had
managed to leave Deepdale with a point his mood was subdued
by the injury that Andy Booth suffered at the end of the first
half.
April 7th Delroy Facey scored the early goal, in the ninth minute after a slip by Wolves defender Ludovic Pollett, that gave Town three valuable away points in their fight to escape relegation. Played in extremely wet conditions the game was deservedly won by the Terriers, who dominated most of the game. Town started the game on top and Facey was unlucky not to open the scoring when Andy Booth headed an Armstrong corner to his feet only to have his shot blocked on the line by a Wolves defender. Town continued to dominate the game although Vaesen was called upon to keep out attempts from Robinson, Naylor and Ketsbaia and acquitted himself admirable. At the opposite end Wolves keeper Oakes had to earn his wages by making a good save from Facey and also was fortunate when a Morris shot cannoned off his body, hit the post and rebounded out to safety. Wolves had the lions share of the possession in the last 35 minutes but could not penetrate a resolute Town defence. Thsi result bodes well for Town's attempt to retain their membership of the First Division although they face another stern test when they visit Preston next Tuesday.
April 3rd Town will count themselves fortunate to have come away with a point from London as Palace dominated throughout the game with Morrison and Forssell, on-loan from Chelsea, looking dangerous with every Palace attack. Both sides started the game cagily but Palace created the clearer chances and it was not until late into the first half that the Terriers managed to test Kolinko in the Eagles goal. Delroy Facey unleashed a tremendous 20-yard shot which Kolinko did well to turn round the post. Palace maintained the pressure on the Town defence in the second half and could have scored at least three goals had not Nico Vaesen been in blinding form. The Belgian saved the best till last when he made a superb reflex save to deny Morrison who had only Vaesen to beat. Once again Facey had the best chance for the visitors but saw his header drift past the wrong side of the post when he found himself unmarked in the Palace area. With both teams struggling at the foot of the table this will be viewed as a moral victory for the Terriers and if their home form continues to earn them points they could well be out of the danger zone and safe from relegation before the end of the season.
March 2001March 31st The dream return of the prodigal son saw the Terriers notch up a great win that sees them come closer to escaping the relgation zone - but there is a long way to go before safety is secured. With Dean Gorre returning to his best and Andy Booth scoring on his home debut, this was the kind of result that the home fans could only dream of. And yet it was a poor start from Town it could so easily have been different. Portsmouth took the lead in the 33rd minute when record signing Lee mills rifled the ball home from 25 yards. This made up for the chance he fluffed seconds earlier when he allowed Vaesen to save when he was clean through with only the Town keeper to beat. After the break Town took control and Gorre was instrumental in setting up the first two goals for Booth (55 minutes) and Facey (70 minutes), and then scored himself with a penalty in the 89th minute after Lee Morris was fouled in the area. Simon Baldry rounded the scoring off in injury time to complete the rout.
March 22nd On the same day the club announced that it had reached a mutual agreement with Ken Monkou and as a result the player is no longer contracted to the club. March 21st March 17th This was never going to be a pretty derby but the Terriers came through a stiff test to take 3 points against a Blades side that had hoped to reinforce their play-off hopes at Town's expense. Given that there were a several players and management that linked the two clubs together this was always going to be a hard fought contest. No doubt Sheffield manager Neil Warnock was eager to prove a point to his former club and Peter Ndlovu, Rob Kozluk, Martin Smith and Lee Morris all having previously played for their adversaries the game had added spice. It was Sheffield United who seemed the more composed of the two sides in the opening exchanges but thankfully they did not manage to step up a gear to the slick passing play that briefly saw them in the top six earlier in the season. It came as something of a surprise when Town took the lead in the 24th minute when Martin Smith found the net against his old club with a close range effort. United soon equalised when Asaba let rip a sweet volley after a poor clearance from Moses. This was the signal for United to continue their pressure on the Town defence but the teams stayed level as the half time whistle blew. In the second half Sheffield still held the upper hand although both keepers had to make some impressive saves. Then in the 77th minute Delroy Facey headed home an Armstrong corner to give the Terriers the lead and, ultimately, all three points. A fortuitous result given the amount of Sheffield possession and their superiority in open play but the end result means that Town rise one place in the table and close the gap on the sides immediately above them. Given Huddersfield's games in hand this offers hope of salvation from relegation as the see-saw season continues to its climax.
March 10th Despite a debut goal from on-loan striker Lee Morris, Huddersfield were made to pay for some poor defending and lack of finishing ability from the strikers, Kevin Gallen being amongst the worst of the culprits. BArnsley started the game on the attack and were unlucky not to take the lead early on when Ward's volley flew just wide of the goal. But it was Huddersfield who drew first blood in the 10th minute when a misplaced backpass was pounced on by Lee Morris who coolly slipped the ball past the Tykes keeper. The lead lasted for just 17 minutes before Bruce Dyer, once a loan signing for Town, challenged Vaesen for the ball and when the keeper fumbled Dyer reacted swiftly to prod the ball into the net. After half time the threats from the Barnley attackers continued to unsettle the Terriers defence and in the 56th minute Dyer was on hand to latch on to a great cross from Barnard for his second goal of the game. Finally, in the 78th minute, Neil Shipperley collected a long ball from Chettle and fired in past Vaesen from 10 yards out. Another defeat for the Terriers that has left them in a precarious position near the foot of the table, the only consolation being that none of the other clubs around them obtained a point on the day.
March 8th March 6th It was obvious that Grimsby had started the game intent upon securing an away point and they continued to thwart the Town attackers in a frustrating night for the home fans. Throughout the game Huddersfield had the lion's share of possession but failed to break down a resolute defence. Indeed it was the visitors who came closed to breaking the deadlock but some fine defensive blocking by Lucketti and Dyson saved Vaesen and Town's blushes. After returning from a 7-match break due to injury Simon Baldry tried his hardest to create openings for Smith and Gallen but their efforts on goal were either off target or easily dealt with by the Mariners defence. The best that can be said about this match is that Town managed to keep a clean sheet but the lack of an incisive striker could well be a major factor in deciding which league Town will be playing in next season.
March 3rd This scrappy game was settled by two goals that belied the quality of the rest of the game as Craig Armstrong gave Town the lead in the 8th minute and Delroy Facey wrapped up the points in the 71st minute - making amends for two previous misses, one of which hit the post. When the statistics are compiled it will be condemning for the Canaries, who managed only one shot on target and one corner, and this as they sought to gain a third win in a row. A lot of the credit for their ineffectiveness can go to the Town defence who were rock solid. Craig Armstrong started the scoring in the eighth minute with a cracker of a shot that found top, right-hand corner of the visitors net from 20 yards out. With Kenny Irons returning to form and bossing midfield Town continued to make inroads in to the Norwich half but failed to take advantage of their superiority until Facey made it third time lucky when he swept in a cross from Irons to take his tally for the season to 5. Earlier in the second half he had contrived to miss when latching on to the end of some delightful crosses from Gallen and Baldry. This win, Huddersfield's first since December 26th, moved Town off the bottom of the table and renewed the hopes of their long-suffering supporters that the dreaded drop into the Second Division can be avoided.
February 2001February 27th The visiting supporters escaped the snow of West Yorkshire only to receive a frosty reception on the Wirral as Huddersfield Town's brittle defence was again shattered by a mediocre team, below them in the table at the start of the game. Once again it was an ex-Huddersfield player, in the shape of Wayne Allison, connecting with a Koumas cross in the 55th second, who put Rovers ahead. A rare goal from the burly attacker - indeed his first since last October! From there on in it was the usual tale of ineffective strikers and hesitant defenders and without the skill of Nico Vaesen in goal the scoreline would have been even greater. Again static a defence allowed Yates to convert a Barlow cross, heading home from a couple of yards out, in the 38th minute to give Tranmere their second goal, three points and enabling them to leapfrog over Town in the table. Once again the Terriers are propping up the rest of the division and, once again, relegation is looming. Town did fashion a couple of chances, Martin Smith coming closest with a header just before Tranmere's second goal, but the truth is that the Terriers will have to learn how to defend and then create on the break before it is too late. Somehow this seems too tall a task for the current squad and only a drastic change in personnel will make any difference. No matter how good Lou Macari is as a manager it is apparent that the lightweight players in the Town squad can not stop the downward spiral of the club's fortunes.
February 24th Burnley were the more threatening side throughout the game with both Little and Moore causing problems for the Terriers defence and forcing Vaesen into action on a number of occasions. But Town did create their own chances, the best of which was spurned by Delroy Facey in the 33rd minute when it seemed impossible to miss. Facey seemed to act too hastily and spooned the ball over the bar with a left foot shot. Facey and Thomas were both injured in a clash of heads in the 72nd minute and while Facey managed to continue, albeit with a bandaged head, Thomas was replaced by ex-Terrier Andy Payton. In the very last minute Facey sent in a cross which Chris Lucketti sent towards goal but a marvellous diving save from Michopoulos ensured that the points stayed in Lancashire. This now leaves Town firmly entrenched in the bottom three at the foot of the table and relegation looking ever more ominous.
February 17th Town took an early lead when Craig Armstrong popped up in the box to convert a Thornley cross in the 15th minute. But the lead only lasted for 5 minutes as the Gills scored through Saunders with Vaesen stranded in no-man's land and the defence static. And it was Saunders again who scored in the 24th minute to give the visitors the lead. But Town were not to be outdone and Steve Jenkins earned his team a penalty kick when a strong run into the penalty area was unfairly halted by a defender towards the end of the first half. Martin Smith stepped up and coolly planted the ball into the back of the Gillingham net for the equalizer. After the break Gillingham defended in depth, frustrating the Town attackers time after time and a great run by King, who slotted the ball past Vaesen to score what became the decisive goal in this encounter. Poor defending was the downfall of Town as were largely subdued by a tight Gillingham side who included three players who had donned the famous blue and white stripes in the past - namely Marcus Browning, Iffy Onuora and Vince Bartram. A disappointing game for the Town faithful as Town failed to win yet another game and, indeed, have not won a game since the departure of on-loan Peter Ndlovu.
February 15th February 10th A last gasp equalizer in the 90th minute gave Bolton a deserved point even though Town were 2-0 in front in the first half through Martin Smith and Kevin Gallen and Craig Armstrong missed a penalty in the second. Town started well when Martin Smith shot past
the goalkeeper in the fifth minute to give Town an unexpected
lead. In the 20th minute Gallen put Town two goals ahead when
he rolled the ball past Banks in the Wanderers goal. The second half saw Bolton take the initiative
and it was no surprise when Bergsson scored in the 61st minute
after a great cross from Summerbee. Town were left to rue this chance to wrap up all three points when Frandsen let rip a 30-yard screamer to equalize in the 90th minute and save the blushes of the home team, who remain second in the table.
February 3rd After an enforced lay off due to postponements and cup football Town managed to extend their unbeaten run to 9 games in the league after this draw at the McAlpine Stadium. Both of the goals came in the first half, Forest taking the lead in the 11th minute through Scimeca after a good cross from Benali. Vaesen was furious with his defenders for allowing the Forest man the space to get his head to the ball. Forest continued to shade the half but as the half time whistle approached Delroy Facey managed to elude his marker and fire the ball into the back of the net after Kevin Gallen headed the ball back into the 6-yard box. In the second half both sides had the opportunity to take the lead but failed to take their chances and the game closed with a point each. Facey was the danger man for Town, continuing with his rich vein of form.
January 2001January 20th January 13th Town had most of the possession and most of the attacks but still couldn't find the killer touch even though Baldry hit the crossbar twice and Smith had an effort tipped onto the wood after a great save from the County keeper. FAcey and Gallen also had their chances but spurned them and this was a case of two points lost rather than one point gained.
January 6th The story of the games revolved around Bristol's tenacity and graft as they stifled any creative play by the home team. And it was this gritty performance that earned City the points as Clist headed past Vaesen in the 55th minute and Beadle sealed the victory with a shot in the 83rd minute. Town were outworked in the first half and were lucky not to go into the break one goal down when Beadle contrived to miss the ball when only two yards out at the end of the first half. In the second half Town showed more purpose but could not break down the visitors defence which was well organised by skipper Mullen. Both Baldry and Armstrong were denied by the woodwork as the curse of the Manager of the Month award seemed to strike the unlucky Lou Macari. The loss of on-loan Peter Ndlovu due to his recall by Birmingham and the injured Chris Lucketti seemed to disrupt the form of a Town team that had been unbeaten in their previous 7 outings. However the quick exit from the Cup now allows Town the opportunity to concentrate on escaping from the relegation zone in the League. Scant reward for the Town faithful who were looking forwards to a plum tie in the next round.
January 4th January 1st December 2000December 31st December 30th Both sides seemed determined not to lose this game as opposed to actually trying to win it but it maintains Town's unbeaten run and keeps them out of the relegation zone. But as a spectacle this game left a lot to be desired. The first half was a tale of missed opportunity and lost possession with both sides looking nervous. The pace was frantic and the passing was awry but there were chances at both ends. Baldry and Facey both tested the reactions of Pressman in the Owls goal whilst Vaesen has to save with his legs from Ekoku at the other end. After the break both teams continues in the same vein but to no avail. Then in the 75th minute Sibon earned his second yellow card and was sent off - only 15 minutes after coming on as a substitute! At this stage the onlookers expected Town to prees home their numerical advantage but for some inexplicable reason Lou Macari chose to retain the 4-4-2 formation despite the fact that Wednesday only had Ekoku in the front line. And so, with chances being mis-kicked and Town huffing and puffing but getting nowhere the game drew to a close with neither side making any inroads into creating a gap between themselves and the bottom teams in the division. Town just about edged the game and will rue the fact that they did not register their first double of the season.
December 26th Although Tranmere tried there best to stop Town playing, the men in blue and white went about their task admirable to complete a great run and send the fans home happy. The first half was easily forgotten due to Tranmere's spoiling tactics - until the 44th minute when Delroy Facey continued his great run of form to shoot home. Then two goals in five minutes. The first from Jon Dyson in the 65th and the second from Kevin Gallen wrapped up the points for the Terriers. Tranmere rarely threatened the Town goal although Koumas did hit the woodwork from a free kick and the current vein of form that the Terriers have shown. This could earn manager, Lou Macari, a manager of the month award. 19 games with only one win and then five wins in the last six games is nothing short of a miraculous about turn in form.
December 23rd In the first half Town totally outplayed Watford
and should have gone in rather than being level. That man
Ndlovu struck again in the 29th minute when a through ball
found him one-on-one with the keeper after his run beat the
static defence. After the break Watford started to threaten the Town goal but it was the Terriers who scored through Delroy Facey to take all three points. Facey took the ball past a couple of defenders with his strength and pace and planted the ball firmly into the back of the Watford net. Thereafter Watford continued to press for the equalizer but Town defended in depth and relied upon breakaway attacks as a counter measure. This win saw Town climb back off the bottom of the table, albeit on goal difference, and also saw them close the gap on the clubs further up.
December 20th December 16th The Terriers totally dominated the first half
in all areas and should have gone into the break with more
than the one goal that Jon Dyson scored in the 38th minute
from a Ben Thornley corner. The half time roasting that player/manager Steve Claridge gave his troop worked wonders because Portsmouth took the game by the scruff of the neck and began to pose a serious threat to Nico Vaesen's goal. And the pressure finally paid off in the 76th minute when Bradbury's cross found Claridge at the far post and the veteran striker made no mistake with his shot. Thereafter Town had to fight hard to keep the scores level for the rest of the game, bringing Baldry and Thornley back to help out the defence thus limiting the attacking options of the visitors. Portsmouth looked to have clinched the points in the dying second of the match but Vaesen gratefully grabbed the ball on the goal line.
December 14th December 13th The first half was something of an even match
with both sides trading possession and position but to no
avail. After the break Ben Thornley gave Forsel a warning
when his beautifully crafted shot hit the post and rebounded
out. But Town were not to be denied and in the 57th minute
Ndlovu put the visitors in front with a great shot. Forest managed to pull a goal back in the 69th minute and threatened to score more but were denied by Vaesen on more than one occasion. That being said Town could have scored themselves but both Ndlovu and Facey were guilty of missing sitters.
