January 2001January 30th Huddersfield were the poorer of the two sides as Blackpool put a bad run behind them as early as the third minute when Richie Wellens carved a path through the visitors defense and shot home after a return pass from Bullock. Town, defending deep, were reduced to the occasional foray upfield as Blackpool continued to show more application. It was no surprise when the Seasiders increased their lead thorough John Murphy as he headed home a Simpson cross in the 38th minute. Town did manage to pull a goal back in the 55th minute when Danny Schofield buried the ball from the edge of the area but the game still belonged to Blackpool and in the 70th minute when the influential Bullock teed up Scott Taylor for his first goal in Blackpool colours. The scoreline could have been even worse but for the goalkeeping of Martyn Margetson who pulled off some splendid saves, most notably from Day, Wellens and O'Kane. A sad night for the Terriers, who were made to look ordinary, but there is always the return leg in a fortnight's time.
January 26th In wet and windy conditions both sides showed their skillful passing ability but lacked penetration in the final third of the field until Andy Booth headed home a Chris Hay cross in the 35th minute for the opening goal. This served to sting Rangers into action but Town proved capable of keeping their attackers, including ex-Town striker Kevin Gallen, muzzled and maintained their lead as the referee blew for half-time. After the break Rangers continued to attack at every opportunity and Town looked decidedly rattled. Thomson was the main threat for the visitors and looked capable of creating his own chances. In an effort to settle the panicky defense Lou Macari substituted striker Chris Hay with midfielder Craig Armstrong in the 63rd minute yet still QPR pressed for an equalizer whilst Town were limited to the occasional break from defense In the latter stages of the match QPR still pressed for an equalizer with Doudou being prominent amongst the attackers but Town clung on to their slender lead with determination. Goal line clearances and last ditch tackles enabled Town to keep QPR at bay and rewarded them with all three points. This was Town's third successive league win and saw them move up the table towards the play-off zone.
January 23rd In the fifth minute Schofield was set up by Leon Knight and made no mistake and in the 25th minute Scofield buried the ball as it came to him after a scramble in the U's area. Huddersfield were by far the better side
in the first half and thouroughly desevred their 2 -
0 half time lead but, as has been obvious throughout
the season, they switched to defensive mode for the
second half.
January 22nd January 19th Andy Booth opened the scoring for the visitors when he lashed home a shot after Danny Schofield had chested the ball into his path - and this within the second minute of the game! Town continued to press forward, with Martyn Margetson pretty much a spectator in his goal, and in the 23rd minute the Terriers were two up when Chris Hay was fortunate to receive a deflection from a viscious Leon Knight volley which he fired home with some aplomb. Knight himself added a third 13 minutes later when he headed home a Hay cross with some conviction. As the half drew to a close it was the Terriers who were in attack mode and the Cherries had all on to stem the constant raids forward. At the start of the second half Town were pegged back by a Bournemouth side whose half time team talk must have galvanised them into action but Town came closest to scoring when Knight found himself one-on-one with the keeper but Stewart pulled of a great save. Then on 57 minutes Derek Holmes managed to claw back a goal for Bournemouth, after Fletchers shot hit the post and trickled back to him, giving the home team something to fight for. From the restart Knight had an excellent chance to maintain Town's 3-goal advantage but he shot over the bar when it would have been easier to score. Thereafter Town appeared to settle for a
defensive role, which was being thoroughly tested by the
Cherries, and looked decidedly shaky. Then in the 44th minute Feeney hit the back of the net with an acute angled shot, making the score 2 - 3 and giving Town several anxious minutes (including injury time) before the referee blew his whistle. What happened to the team that were so dominant in the first half and the team who were put on the defensive in the second can only be put down to the manager's tactical plans and, as has happened in the past, Town were left hanging on to the three points by the skin of their teeth.
January 15th Despite the better placing in the league Huddersfield were reduced to long range shots for much of the first half and if anyone should have taken the lead it was the Shakers for their more incisive attacking display. After the break it was again the home side who looked hungrier for a goal until they had Stuart sent off in the 78th minute. Thereafter Town mounted attack after attack but to no avail.
January 12th Andy Booth offered an assist as his poor back-pass was headed past keeper Margetson by Nicky Forster in the 56th minute, rubber stamping the visitors superiority. Thereafter Reading showed great strength in defence and kept Town pegged back in their own half with some fine work from midfield and strikers.
January 8th In an evenly matched first half Town managed
to take the lead in the 38th minute when a fine run on the
right, and a shot, from Chris Holland was kept out of the
Hull goal by Musselwhites hand, only for the ball to land
at the feet of Andy Booth. The second half was a different story however,
and Town set up their shaky defensive stall and allowed Hull
to mount attack after attack! Time after time the Tigers were guilty of either losing possession or shooting wide. This was a great frustration to the home supporters but raised a heart jeer from the visiting Town faithful. Not a pretty game by anyone's standards but at the end of the day Town progress through to the Northern Area Finals of the LDV Vans Trophy.
