September 2001September 25th The first half was all midfield bluster until
the closing stages when substitute keeper Phillips had to
make an a series of fine saves to thwart the Terriers strike
force. After the break Huddersfield continued to press the visitors and in the 71st minute a Chris Holland cross found Andy Booth who headed the ball down for Thorrington to shoot past Phillips. Towards the end of the second half City threw caution to the wind as Town hung on to their slender lead and were unlucky not to equalize when Amankwah hit the bar just before the referee blew his whistle. This was an important result for Town as it allowed them to leapfrog City and climb towards the top of the table.
September 25th Town were the dominant side in the first half
although the visitors were denied a penalty after Reeves was
felled in the box. In the second half Chesterfield had another valid penalty claim denied but the closest the deadlock came to being broken was when Dwayne Mattis saw his shot beat the keeper but come back off the bar just 4 minutes from the end. All in all this was a competent Town performance against an in-form Chesterfield side with the midfield producing some good play and the defence holding firm against some creative attacks.
September 22nd Cardiff started the game well and £1.8m
record signing Peter Thorne powerfully nodded home his debut
goal in the 7th minute, by converting a Grayson cross, to
raise the spirits of the home fans. Town continued to dominate the midfield and cause the Cardiff defence problems as they surged forward. It came as no suprise when, in the 11th minute of the second half, Danny Schofield took advantage of a poor clearance from the City keeper to fire the Terriers into the lead. Cardiff had their opportunities to attack the Town defence but these were lacking in direction and purpose, mainly being restricted to hopeful punts upfield. Town's central defenders were to prove capable of handling these as the game progressed. This result ended Huddersfield's run of bad
form and gave hope for a renewed attack on the top of the
table and promotion back to the First Division by next May.
September 18th Huddersfield were the dominant side in the first
half but failed to make their superiority pay as both Booth
and Thorrington spurned good chances to let Wigan off the
hook. To make matters worse Andy Booth created a scoring opportunity for himself but contrived to make a mess and shoot wide! In the first minute of the second half Wigan took the lead when Haworth collected a cross, saw Margetson off his line and coolly floated in a shot from 25 yards that sailed over the Town keepers head and into the back of the net. After that Town continued to put pressure on the home defence as they sought an equalizer but when Schofield was dismissed in the 73rd minute for two bookable fouls on the same player - Dalglish - Town were forced into firing up long balls for Booth to collect and couldn't get the break they deserved.
September 15th The Terriers started off the match as the better
side and took the lead in the 18th minute when Nathan Clarke
latched on to a Holland cross to nod the ball home from close
range. After the break it was Blackpool who continued where they left off and went further into the lead when Ormerod scored his second in the 64th minute. This prompted Lou Macari to make a couple of changes and this seemed to have the desired effect when John Thorrington snatched a goal back in the 87th minute but Ormerod completed his hat-trick deep into injury time, exposing the frailties of a home defence without the grit of players like the transferred Chris Lucketti.
September 10th September 8th Town, without both Andy Booth and Steve Jenkins in the starting line-up, took the lead after Danny Schofield latched onto a Chris Beech pass and coolly slotted the ball past the home keeper in the 36th minute. But this was a rare foray forward for Huddersfield as they appeared to play with just Schofield up front. Thereafter the Terriers had their backs to the wall but it looked as if they had managed to hang on to their lead until Peter Thorne hit a superb half-volley into the back of the Town net in injury time. Town should be satisfied with this point although it sees them drop two places in the table, albeit on goal difference, as Stoke continuously applied pressure on the Town defence. Indeed the defenders were the stars of this stout performance and manager Lou Macari will be well pleased with the result.
September 2nd In front of the Sky TV cameras Town were put under pressure by the visitors from the start and it came as no real surprise when they succumbed to a Holligan strike in the 15th minute, despite the despairing efforts of both Margetson and Heary. This acted as a spur for the Town team and they charged forward at every opportunity in search of an equalizer. Eventually, in the 38th minute the ball fell to Thorrington on the edge of the area and he unleashed a wicked shot that beat the Wycombe keeper and ensured that the teams went in at half time on equal terms. After the break it was the visitors who applied pressure on Town's defence but against the run of play a Thorrington cross was headed into his own net by Brown in the 70th minute. This was the signal for Wycombe to push forward and there were a few tricky moments for the Terriers defence before the referee blew for full time. The highlights of this unbeaten home run for Town is the performances of Thorrington and Schofield and the return after injury of Simon Baldry. Town will undergo a stiffer test when they visit Stoke on Saturday though.
