May 2005

May 7th
All in all a satisfactory season for the Terriers after their promotion from the Second Division last season.
Town finished 9th in the final table and were just one point (and a few goals) away from clinching a place in the divisional play-offs.
What a shame that the boys in blue and white couldn't start the season they way they finished it - with a club record 8 wins and one draw in the final 9 games of the season.

It was also a very satisfactory season for Huddersfield's leading scorer Pawel Abbott. His 27 goals were of great help to the club. Hopefully this will do his chances of playing for the Polish national side a great deal of good (he has already played for the Polish Under 21's).

Defender Nathan Clarke was named Supporters and Players Player of the Year.

Coca Cola League 1
Wrexham 0 - 1 Huddersfield Town
The Terriers ended their season with this win over already relegated Wrexham.
Although the home side dominated much of this game it was David Mirfin's goel that gained all three points for the visitors. He headed home an Ahmed corner in the 43rd minute.

Huddersfield Town 4 - 0 Swindon Town
The action in this, Town's final home game of the season, was concentrated into the last moments of the first half and then into the second half, where the Terriers fired home 4 goals.

The teams were evenly matched until the end of the first half when Swindon had two men sent off. First Davi Duke earned a second yellow and was dismissed and then seconds later Rory Fallon followed him off the pitch when his high kick was deemed to be serious foul play by referee Eddie Evans.

After the break Huddersfield dominated play and it was no surprise when Pawel Abbott notched up his 26th goal of the season in the 62nd minute. Booth added a second in the 79th minute, Abbott then scored his second, and Town's third, in the 80th minute before veteran Rob Edwards finshed the rout off with a goal in the 85th minute.....

Huddersfield Town 1 - 0 Sheffield Wednesday
Huddersfield's biggest crowd of the season saw the Terriers come away with all three points against local rivals and promotion contenders Sheffield Wednesday.
Town took the lead in the 7th minute when Jonathan Worthington fired home a sweet daisy-cutter from the edge of the area.
The Owls had Alex Bruce sent off in the 43rd minute for dangerous play and Town never looked back.

After the break Huddersfield looked to increase their lead against 10-man Wednesday but Worthington's goal proved to be the decider.
Six points from the tow Easter games saw the home side move up the table to 13th, only 6 points off a play-off place and away from danger of relegation.

At last an away win and one that was more smash and grab than anything else. Although United had the lion's share of the game Town took the lead in the 42nd minute with a trademark header.

After the break Hartlepool continued to attack the Terriers goal but found that the woodwork and some fine work from Rachubka kept them out. In the 67th minute Nathan Clarke was sent off but Town held on for all three points.

Huddersfield Town 5 - 3 Stockport County
A late rally in the last 10 minutes saw Huddersfield win this encounter with the League's bottom team.
Feeney opened the scoring in the 2nd minute but Stockport's lead lasted just two minutes when Booth headed home from close range.

After the break Town took the lead when Pawel Abbott chipped the County keeper but Stockport were not to be outdone and equalised in the 57th minute when Feeney scored from the penalty spot.
The visitors then regained the lead through that man Fenney when he scored with a header but Town were not to be outdone and scored three more times in the last ten minutes. First Mirfin scored a cheeky goal with an overhead kick in the 82nd minute before Ahmed scored his debut goal for Huddersfield in the 83rd minute.
Finally Dolan kicked the ball into his own net in the 90th minute to seal the victory for the home team.

Huddersfield Town 2 - 1 Oldham Athletic
Despite taking the lead early in this game the Huddersfield faithful were still left holding their breath as Oldham staged a second half comeback.
Prolific striker Pawel Abbott added to his 19 goals of the season when he scored two goals in the first half.
His first goal in the 4th minute came after a defender had miscued his clearance and Pawel chipped a lovely ball over the keeper and in to the back of the net.
The second goal on 29 minutes was scored from close range after Delroy Facey took the ball into the Oldham penalty box and then crossed to give Abbott an easy tap-in.
The Terriers continued to pressure the visitors' goal but to no avail.

After the break Oldham took the initiative as Town looked to sit back on their two goal advantage. However Branston pulled a goal back in the 75th minute, giving the Terriers some anxious moments before the final whistle went.

Two goals in the first 25 minutes were enough to knock the stuffing out of a Town team that showed a reluctance to cash in on excellent approach work.

Tranmere took the lead in the 16th minute when Dadi scored and then they doubled the score when Hume fired home a Sharps cross. Thereafter there was little goalmouth excitement until Roberts slottedf home in second half injury time.

After the break Blackpool continued to press the home team and things looked bleak when Brandon was sent off in the 57th minute and then McAliskey fluffed a penalty kick awarded to the Terriers. However Town held on to their slim advantage and managed to win all three valuable points.

Walsall 4 - 3 Huddersfield Town
This was a game which Huddersfield Town were guilty of snatching defeat away from the jaws of victory.
Andy Booth put the Terriers in front as early as the 7th minute with a crisp shot. On loan striker Luke Beckett then scrambled the ball home in the 11th minute. Walsall then hit back when player/manager Paul Merson struck the target in the 16th minute. Huddersfield, not to be undone then stretched their lead back to two goals when Beckett struck again in the 33rd minute. At this stage Town had their 3-man strike force to thank for givng them a clear lead. Unfortunately the visitors defence couldn't match the sterling work that the strikers had lead the way with and leaked another goal in first half injury time with a great volley from teenager Matt Fryatt.

After the break both sides attacked with gusto but whereas the Walsall defence held firm in the face of the Town attacks the same cannot be said of the Terriers defence. In the 50th minute Efe Sodje was guilty of handling the ball in the penalty area and young Fryatt kept his cool to score Walsalls equalizer. Then in the 74th minute Fryatt completed his hat-trick and won the points for the home team when he converted a Merson pass.

Huddersfield Town 3 - 2 Bournemouth
Huddersfield started the game on the ascendency and were awarded a penalty in the 6th minute when Andy Booth had his shirt pulled in the area. Pawel Abbott made no mistake with the spot kick to score his 19th goal of the season.
In the 38th minute on-loan striker Luke Beckett (from Sheffield United) was set up by Worthington to score his first goal for the club on his home debut.

The Cherries were not to be outdone though and in the 45th minute James Hayter headed home to reduce the deficit to one goal. However in stoppage time the Terriers icreased their lead to two goals when Luke Beckett scored his second goal, converting an Andy Booth pass from 10 yards.

After the break Bournemouth rallied and made life difficult for the home side. Then in the 62nd minute Hayter scored his second goal of the day, beating the offside trap and firing the ball past Rachubka, to bring the Cherries back into the game and Town had to defend valiantly for the remainder of the game.
Town managed to hang on and claim the three points, only their third victory in 16 games.

This was a case of the Terriers losing two points as opposed to Bristol gaining a point.
Town started off brightly enough and took the lead in the 18th minute when Dinning tried to clear the ball and only succeeded in scoring an own goal when the ball hit Fortune and landed in the goal.

After the break Huddersfield went further ahead when a poor back header was converted by Pawel Abbott, a lovely lob over the advancing goalkeeper.

Bristol rose to the challenge and in the 71st minute Lita beat Paul Rachubka, beating him with a shot set up by Dinning. Then calamity struck when Nathan Clarke headed into his own net in the 90th minute. Town tried to rally in the last few seconds of the game with Chris Brandon hit the post but it was to be of no avail and the points were shared.

A local derby on New Years Day failed to live up to expectations and the Terriers lost to the odd goal despite scoring first.
The game started off with both sides showing that they meant business but it wasn't until the 40th minute before a goal was scored when Brandon converted a McAliskey cross. Their lead only lasted for 2 minutes when Elliott scored a nicely worked goal through the legs of Rachubka.

Four minutes after the game restarted for the second half Hull scored what proved to be the decisive goal when substitute Wibraham headed home an Angus cross for his first goal of the season.

Despite Bournemouth's higher position in the league table Town fought hard to come away with a valuable point.
Bournemouth took the lead in the 17th minute when Rachubka made a save only to see the ball fall to Spicer who shot home. Town were not to be subdued however and in the 38th minute McAliskey latched on to a Holdsworth cross and fired the ball home to level the scores.

After the break Spicer got his second of the game in the 51st minute when he volleyed the ball past a despairing Rachubka.
Town were not about to concede the game and in 60th minute Mirfin headed the ball home to score his first goal of the season.

Vale managed to snatch a goal back in the 38th minute when Edwarsds was soundly beaten by Birchall and his cross was headed home by Eldershaw.

After the break the game ebbed and flowed but Huddersfield hung on to their advantage and emerged as victors at the end.

An entertaining match by these two local rivals left Oldham with three points and Town pointless, an undeserved loss.
Oldham took the lead as early as the 4th minute when Haining headed home a corner from Kilkenny. The Terriers fought back with typical tenacity and were level within two minutes when Pawel Abbott headed home his 14th league goal of the season from an Edwards cross.
Town then had a goal disallowed and in the 38th minute Betsy resored the Latics lead with a shot that proved to be the deciding goal.

Town did try to get back on level terms in the second half but Oldham's defence held firm, particularly Pogliacomi in their goal who made several good saves.

In the second half Huddersfield continued to have the better of the play but failed to take advantage of the situation when Heywood was sent off for the home team. Then in the 87th minute Town were reduced to 10 men when Fowler was sent off for serious foul play. To add insult to injury Swindon scored through Smith in the 89th minute.

Yet again the Terriers were knocked out of the FA Cup in the first round. Tis time it was a fist half blitz of goals that knocked Town down and out. Ashley Williams scored in the 8th minute then Warren Feeney grabbed a brace on 19 and 45 minutes. All of the County goals were, significantly, earned from set pieces.

Town did manage to grab a consolation goal at the end of the second half through Abbott - his 13th of the season - but it was scant consolation for the visiting supporters.

At the other end Burton had a goal ruled out for offside and Salako failed to beat Rachubka when put clean through.

After the break Brentford showed early promise and in the 62nd minute took the lead when Sodje scrambled the ball home from a Salako corner.
The Terriers were stung into a reply and in the 71st minute Abbott fired home a Danny Schofield centre. This was how the game remained as both sides earned a point.

Four minutes later Schofield was shown a red card and the Terriers were down to 10 men.
Then in the 84th minute Town were awarded a penalty after Nat Brown was brought down in the penalty area. Mendes took the penalty which was saved by Morecambe keeper Sollitt saved but the referee adjudged that Sollitt had moved before the kick was taken so Mendes retook the penalty, this time making sure that he scored.

Bristol City 3 - 3 Huddersfield Town
This was a game where Town threw away what looked like a well earned three points and had to settle for just the one.

Bristol City took the lead early on in the game when Murray headed home a Hill cross, leaving Clarke clutching at thin air as he tried to gather.
Town countered well and managed to hit the woodwork in the 19th minute, courtesy of a Danny Schofield effort on goal. Schofield carried on the hard work and finally found the net in the 28th minute when he converted an Abbott cross.
Then in the 35th minute Town took the lead when Abbott latched on to Nat Brown pass and fired home from 12 yards.

After the break Bristol started the second half well, putting pressure on the Terriers defence. However Huddersfield increased their lead in the 60th minute when a shot by Abbott was parried by the Bristol keeper and Chris Brandon took advantage by firing home into an empty net.
All seemed to be going well for Town but in the 82nd minute Bristol were awarded a penalty after Brown fouled Lita. It was Lita himself who took the spot kick to close the difference between the two teams.
Finally, to add insult to injury, a speculative shot from Bristol's Wilkshire was deflected by Mirfin into his own goal giving Bristol a share of the points.

Huddersfield Town 0 - 2 Hartlepool United
Town looked the more dangerous of the two sided in the first 20 minutes of the game but the Hartlepool defence were more than a match for the Huddersfield attack.

Closed Season 2004

A quiet closed season for the Terriers where transfer activity was minimal to say the least. After the securing of promotion last season Town acquired two new signings in Chris Brandon, a central midfielder, from Chesterfield and Junior Mendes, a striker, from Mansfield.
Players transferred out were Dwayne Mattis and Jon Newby to Bury, Iffy Onuora to Walsall and Tyrone Thompson to Scarborough. Released from the club were Ian Hughes and Paul Scott.

At the start of the season William Hills offered odds of 20-1 that Huddersfield would gain an automatic promotion place, 7-1 that they would reach the play-off's and 13-2 that they would be relegated.
