Huddersfield Town Banner
(later the Leyland DAF Cup)

Having been relegated to Division Three in 1989, Huddersfield Town were no longer eligible to compete in the Simod Cup and instead took part in the Sherpa Van Trophy.
Originally known as the Associate Members’ Cup, this competition was announced by the Football League in December 1983 and was designed to provide additional interest for the 48 Third and Fourth Division clubs at a time when the majority of them would have been eliminated from one, or other, of the domestic cup tournaments.
It was renamed the Freight/Rover Trophy in 1984 and the early rounds – run on knock–out lines – were played on a regional basis, with the quarter-finalists being the 12 clubs who progressed through the opening sequence of games, plus the four highest scorers from the sides eliminated to that point.
The two regional winners met in the Final, which since 1985 has been held at Wembley.
