THE FULL MEMBERS’ CUP
(later the Simod Cup)
This competition was the idea of Crystal Palace chairman,
Ron Noades, in the wake of the European ban on English clubs.
Only 16 Second Division clubs and Chelsea, Coventry City,
Manchester City, Oxford United and West Bromwich Albion from
Division One, took part in the first competition during 1985-86.
Huddersfield Town were due to participate in the competition’s
inaugural matches, but on 14 September 1985, they chose to
scratch.
Fellow group members Carlisle United and Sheffield Wednesday
also withdrew later. They did, however, accept an invitation
to participate in the following season’s event, but were eliminated
at the first hurdle by eventual winners, Blackburn Rovers.
In 1987-8 it was renamed the Simod Cup.
