The motto Juvat Impigros Deus on the old Huddersfield coat of arms is translated as 'God helps the diligent'.

It is rumoured that Robin Hood was buried in the grounds of Kirklees Priory (read more at robinhoodyorkshire.co.uk ) His tombstone was said to have the following words engraved upon it;
Hear underneath dis laitl stean
Lay Robert, Earl of Hungtinton,
Neer arcir ver as hie sa geud,
An pipl kauled him Robin Heud;
Sick utlauz az he an iz men,
Vill England nivre si agen.
Obiit 24 Kal. Dekembris, 1247

At Cooper Bridge there is a monument called the Dumb Steeple which commemorates the Luddite riots.

The Pack Horse Yard (now demolished) had stalls for a hundred horses, with granaries for the corn, and accomodation for stage coaches, post-chases and carriers wagons.

The first steam engine to be introduced in Huddersfield was set up at Fisher's Factory at the top of Chapel Hill.

The first gas used in Huddersfield was by William Waite, a plumber and glazier. He lighted up his shop front window by making gas on apparatus situated in the back workshop. The first inn to use gas was the White Lion in Cross Church Street.

The first workhouse in Huddersfield was a small brick building in Birkby.

There was a pleasure ground at Honley called Hope Bank Amusement Park which was advertised as : 'New Blackpool - Music for dancing on Saturdays, swings, donkey rides, aerial flights, good stabling for horses, all kinds of temperance beverages - the favourite resort for enjoyment in summer, the most beautiful valley in the district'. After the Second World War popular taste grew away from local places of entertainment and the land was acqired for a Brook Motors factory.

Huddersfield is twinned with Besançon in France, Bielsko Biala in Poland, Kostanai in Kazakhstan and Kreis Unna in Germany.
