The Euro €.

English Pound CoinAt some stage in the next year or so we in the UK will be holding a referendum on whether or not we should adopt the Euro as our national currency.
There are only two sides to this argument: Keep the Pound or adopt the Euro.

European 1 Euro coinI can think of several reasons why we should adopt the Euro, however those arguing for keeping the pound are extremely vocal.
Unfortunately none of the Pound arguments seem to be based on anything more that jingoistic/racist claptrap most of it goes along the lines of: -

  • "Why would we want to have the same currency as the Europeans? After all we were at war with some of them and isn't this a German plot to win the Second World War by the back door. "

  • "We wouldn't have the Queens' head on our currency any more and this is a British tradition."

  • "This is just another step along the road to losing our national identity, we don't want faceless bureaucrats in Brussels making our laws for us."

There are only three reasons 'against' listed here but I suggest that any other reasons are simply versions of the above, voiced, simply, to try and pad out a flimsy argument.

Just in case it's not obvious why the anti-Euro argument isn't worth considering.

  • The last war was ended more that 50 years ago!
As for the Germans taking over, the Germans were taken in at that time by exactly the same isolationist attitudes that the anti-Europeans are pressing now.
The German people might have good reason to shun a Britain run by people like that.

  • As for the tradition to have the monarch's image on our bank notes, how many of them realise that this has only been the case since the last war albeit approximately 50 years that's not a long time for a tradition.

  • Why are laws made in Brussels necessarily bad?
I wonder way how many of these anti-Europeans agree with the policies of our own government?

What we should never lose site of is the fact that at the end of the day it is only money, tokens that we can exchange for goods. What does it matters what you call the denominations or whose picture there is on it?
These 'Keep the Pound' types should get themselves into the real world and vote to join the Euro.
