Family COLUMBIDAE – the Divers
Genus Colymbus L.

BLACK THROATED DIVER, Colymbus arcticus arcticus L.
Irregular visitor. One on Thorpes Reservoir, Slaithwaite, February 1917; one on Brownhill Reservoir between 6 and 25 February 1954.

GREAT NORTHERN DIVER, Colymbus immer immer Brünn.
Irregular visitor. S.L. Mosley records one shot on Blackmoorfoot Reservoir in the winter of 1900-1. One at Brownhill Reservoir 23 February 1954. this bird and the above black-throated diver were seen together between 23 and 25 February, when both left.

Family PODICIPIDAE – the Grebes
Genus Podiceps Lath.

GREAT CRESTED GREBE, podiceps cristatus cristatus (L.)
Winter visitor, occasional. S.L. Mosley records one from Boshaw Reservoir and one from Ramsden Reservoir about 1910. One seen on Blackmoorfoot Reservoir, 4 April 1954, was still in winter plumage; seven were on the same water on 17 November 1956.

BLACK-NECKED GREBE, Podiceps caspicus caspicus Hablizl.
Passage migrant and visitor, rare. Four on Snape Reservoir, near Holmfirth, 9 December 1945; Blackmoorfoot Reservoir, one, 16 April 1949, two, 9 November 1956.

LITTLE GREBE, Podiceps ruficollis ruficollis (Pall.)
Resident, uncommon. Used to breed on Sheard’s Dam, Kirkheaton and occurred there in 1949. Breeding took place in the district in 1950. Two on Blackmoorfoot Reservoir, 23 October 1950; Gunthwaite, 1950.

Family PROCELLARIIDAE – the Petrels
Genus Oceanodroma Reichb.

LEACH’S PETREL, Oceanodroma leucorhoa leucorhoa (Vieill.)
Irregular vistor. Occurrences have taken place at Marsden, about 1895, and at Brighouse and Woodsome in October 1952, following storms at sea when the birds have been driven inland.

Genus Procellaria L.

MANX SHEARWATER, procellaria puffinus puffinus Brünn.
Irregular visitor. One caught in Dalton about 1879, and another on Crosland Moor in 1892.

Genus Sula Briss.

GANNET, Sula bassana (L.)
Irregular visitor. One between Hinchliffe Mill and Holme in 1909, one dead at Kirkburton, February 1912.

Family PHALACROCORACIDAE – the Cormorants
Genus Phalacrocorax Briss.

CORMORANT, Phalacrocorax carbo carbo (L.)
Irregular visitor. Two visited Longwood Reservoir in the autumn of 1910. One on Blackmoorfoot Reservoir, 14 November 1954.

Genus Ardea L.

HERON, Ardea cinerea cinerea L.
Irregular visitor. One shot near Holmfirth, 11 October 1953; one, Elland Gravel pit, 19 August 1957.

Genus, Botaurus stellaris stellaris (L.)
Irregular visitor. One shot at Armitage Bridge about 1891.
