OPENING TIMES
Summer (April to September) our properties are open
seven days a week, Monday to Sunday from 9.30am to 6.30pm.
Some properties have special opening times shown against their
entry.
Winter (October to March) some of our properties
close. The rest are open Monday to Saturday from 9.30am to
4.30pm and from 2.00pm to 4.30pm on Sunday – except where
special opening times are shown in this brochure. Extended
opening times may also apply during the “Autumn Gold” months
of October and November – please telephone for details. All
our properties close on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Please
telephone to check for New Year opening.
With so much to see please leave plenty of time to visit
before the property closes for the evening. We sell the last
ticket 30 minutes before the property closes and 45 minutes
before closing at the larger properties of Edinburgh, Stirling
and Urquhart castles and Fort George. Some of the smaller
monuments may close for a short period over lunch. Please

Mary Queen of Scots spent her last night on Scottish soil
in this Cistercian abbey founded by David 1. The Abbey, built

SWEETHEART ABBEY

The splendid remains of a late 13th and early
14th century Cistercian abbey founded by Devorgilla,
Lady of Galloway, in memory of her husband John Baliol. Devorgilla

THREAVE CASTLE

This massive tower, situated on an island in the River Dee,
was built by Archibald the Grim in the late 14th
century and was later the stronghold of the Black Douglases.

WHITHORN – CRADLE OF CHRISTIANITY

The site of the first Christian church in Scotland founded
by St Ninian in the 5th century it later became
the cathedral of Galloway. In the museum is a fine collection
of early Christian stones. The archaeological excavation

Mary Queen of Scots fled to Craigmillar after the murder
of Rizzio and it was here that the plot was hatched for the
murder of her husband Lord Danley. This handsome structure
with courtyard and gardens covers an area of one and a quarter
acres. The castle is featured in the BBC production of Ivanhoe.

The beautiful walled garden at Edzell is one of Scotland’s
unique sight, created by Sir David Lindsay in 1604. the “Pleasance”
is a delightful formal garden with walls decorated with sculptured
stone panels, flower boxes and niches for nesting birds.
The chequered arrangement of blue and white lobelia in the
wall recesses reflect the heraldic colours of the Lindsays
and the dwarf box hedge borders are cut to give the family
mottos.

Mary Queen of Scots endured nearly a year of imprisonment
in this 14th-century tower before her dramatic
escape in May 1568. During the first war of Independence

In a picturesque setting overlooking the River Nethan, the
oldest part of the castle is a tower house built by Sir James
Hamilton of Finnart in the 16th century. The castle’s
extensive defences include a caponier – a stone vaulted artillery

GLASGOW CATHEDRAL

One of the most magnificent buildings of medieval Scotland,
it is a rare example of complete pre-Reformation Scottish
cathedral. David 1 established the medieval diocese in the
early 12th century but the main building of the
cathedral was not completed until well into the 14th
century. The lighting system reveals much of the medieval
splendour for the first time.

Built by George Maxwell in the 15th century this
elegant and still virtually intact castle was enlarged by
his descendant Patrick Maxwell in the 16th century.
Patrick was infamous for murdering two of his neighbours and

Spynie Palace was the residence of the Bishops of Moray from
the 14th century to 1686. The site is dominated
by the massive tower built by Bishop David Stewart and affords

INCHMAHOME PRIORY

A beautifully situated Augustinian priory founded in 1238

STIRLING CASTLE

Considered by many to be the grandest of all
Scotland’s castles. The castle architecture is outstanding
– the great hall and gatehouse of James IV, the marvellous
Renaissance Palace of James V and the Chapel of Royal James
VI. The castle has strong links with Mary Queen of Scots.
She was crowned in the Chapel in 1543 and narrowly escaped
death by fire in 1561. her son, the future James VI, was
baptised here in 1566. medieval kitchens display and exhibition
on life in the royal palace.

ARGYLL’S LODGING

The finest and most complete surviving example in Scotland
of a 17th century town residence. Built by Sir
William Alexander, founder of Nova Scotia, it passed to the
Argyll family on his death. The principal rooms – including
the Laigh Hall, dining room, drawing room and bedchamber –
are magnificently restored and furnished as they would have
appeared during the 9th Earl of Argyll’s occupation
around 1680.

later much altered, with a round tower built by Bishop Reid

BROCH OF GURNESS

Surrounded by a warren of Iron Age buildings, this broch
probably dates to the 1st century AD. Vikings

MAES HOWE

This world famous tomb was built in Neolithic times, before
2700 BC. The large mounds covers a stone built passage and
a burial chamber with cells in the walls. Ruinic inscriptions
tell of how it was plundered of its treasures by Vikings.

Uncovered by a storm in 1850 Skara Brae is one of the best
preserved Groups of stone Age houses in western Europe. The
houses contain Stone Furniture, hearths and drains and present
